Lake View Student Dies in Jeep Rollover Sunday

The victim of yesterday evening’s vehicle crash has died, San Angelo police said. The crash was caused by reckless driving, police said.  The driver of the Jeep that three teens occupied was attempting to “drift” the Jeep in an off-road maneuver. The Jeep rolled-over, and one of the teens was trapped underneath.                

Sunday at 7:29 pm, San Angelo police responded to a vehicle accident on private property behind Mayfield Paper Co.  Upon arrival, officers observed a 2001 Red Jeep lying on its side. The Jeep was occupied by three juvenile males all 16 years of age.   Due to the injuries sustained to one of the passengers, the San Angelo Police Traffic Section was called to investigate the accident.

Officers administered first aid to the injured until the San Angelo Fire Department arrived on scene.   SAFD transported the back left passenger, Jehren Hebert, to Shannon Medical Center with critical injuries.     The driver, Cristian Bustos, and front passenger, David Rodriguez, both refused medical treatment at the scene. 

Preliminary investigation shows Bustos was driving recklessly while attempting to “Drift” his vehicle on the caliche surface.   As the jeep slid broadside along the caliche, the right wheels dug into the surface and caused the Jeep to flip one and one half times.  Hebert was trapped underneath the vehicle at its resting point. 

This morning, at 7:55 am, Herbert succumbed to his injuries while being treated at Shannon.

Jehren Hebert was a student at Lake View High School.
