Super Bowl on President's Day with Monday Off Work? It Could Happen...

DETROIT, MI  — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated on Friday that he and the NFL are considering expanding the NFL season to 18 games. That extended season would allow for more international games and a Super Bowl on Presidents Day weekend.

In an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Goodell shared his long-term vision for the league. Watch his appearance below:

"I think we're good at 17 now," Goodell said. "But, listen, we're looking at how we continue. I'm not a fan of the preseason."

"And I don't think these guys like it either," he said, gesturing to the NFL fans gathered around the show. "The reality is, I'd rather replace a preseason game with a regular-season game any day. That's just picking quality. If we get to 18 and 2, that's not an unreasonable thing."

The Pat McAfee Show aired at the NFL Draft in Detroit on Friday, and the commissioner appeared on the show.

Fewer preseason games would mean more action in the regular season. Currently, three games are allowed per NFL team to fine-tune the final 53-man roster for the regular season. When the NFL expanded the regular season to 17 games a few years ago, preseason games dropped from four to three. An 18-game regular season would feature one less contest in the preseason.

One benefit of a longer NFL season would give every NFL fan something they have wanted since the popularity of the Super Bowl skyrocketed: a championship game played on President’s Day weekend.

"And then you have Monday off," Goodell said.

No plans are set in stone, and no agendas are being pushed during owner meetings. It’s important to note that if Goodell wanted to expand the regular season, the deal would have to be bargained with the NFL Players Association before any final changes could be made. Many players opposed the expansion to 17 games the first time, with only 51% agreeing to the deal.

Another caveat to Goodell’s vision was more international appearances. Last season, the NFL played games in Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Goodell said that he envisions 16 regular-season games played abroad over the next decade. More international markets are already being added to the queue, with Brazil this season and Spain the year after that.
