It's Official: Police Chief Runoff Set for June

SAN ANGELO, TX - The City of San Angelo officially canvassed the results Wednesday morning from the municipal election held on May 4, 2024, setting up a runoff election for Police Chief in June.

There was one election on the ballot for the city, and that was for the police chief race. The three candidates running were Sergeant Travis Griffith, Lieutenant Chris Cimino, and Lieutenant Mike Hernandez.

According to information from the city, the canvassing of elections is required by the Election Code to take place between 3 and 11 days following the election, after the Early Voting Ballot Board has verified and counted all provisional ballots.

City Mayor Brenda Gunter read out loud the vote totals. They were as follows:

  • Griffith: 3,088 or 46.51%
  • Hernandez: 3,286 or 49.50%
  • Cimino: 265 or 3.99%

State Law requires one candidate to receive 50% plus one vote to win outright in a race with more than two candidates. No candidate received a majority of the votes.

The council also approved a resolution ordering a Runoff Election to be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

“In such a runoff election, the two candidates who received the highest number of votes shall be voted on again, and the candidate who receives the majority of the votes cast for such place in the runoff election shall be declared elected to such office,” information from the agenda stated.

Election hours on June 15, would be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Early voting will be June 3, through June 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and June 10-11 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
