Freezing Rain and Snow Causing Deteriorating Driving Conditions

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Driving conditions across West Texas continue to deteriorate as freezing precipitation continues falling. 

As of 6 a.m, patchy light freezing rain was occurring across the area southeast of a Sonora to Cross Plains line while patchy freezing drizzle was occurring elsewhere.

Temperatures across the region continue to be in the 26 to 29 degree range, except in the Northwest Hill Country and San Saba County where temperatures were in the low 30s.

There have been no reports of ice on the roadways as of yet, although there was a report of a very thin layer of ice on surfaces in Abilene.

Here's a list of delays and closings so far. 

Light freezing rain will develop across the region Today.

Light ice accumulations will likely result in hazardous travel conditions for motorists. Power outages are possible as well.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through late tonight for all counties except Crockett County.

A change-over to snow is likely on Thursday, with 2 to 4 inches or more of snow accumulations possible in the Big Country.

This would contribute to the hazardous travel conditions in that region. The Winter Weather Advisory for the Big Country goes through 6 p.m. Thursday, while elsewhere the Winter Weather Advisory expires at 6 a.m. Thursday morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.

This is a developing situation.  

UPDATE Wed. 8:20 a.m.

As of 8 a.m., patchy light freezing rain was occurring across the area southeast of a Sonora to Cross Plains line while patchy freezing drizzle was occurring elsewhere.

Some moderate freezing rain was occurring from Sonora to just north of Brady. Temperatures across the region continue to be in the 27 to 30 degree range, except in the Northwest Hill Country and San Saba County where temperatures were in the low 30s.

There have been reports of ice on the roadways around Ozona and San Angelo, and a report of a very thin layer of ice on surfaces in Abilene a few hours ago.

Iced over bridges and overpasses have caused multiple crashes in San Angelo and the surrounding areas.  

TxDOT trucks are deicing bridges and overpasses in the San Angelo area.  

UPDATE Wed. 10:30 a.m.

There have been reports of numerous accidents in Abilene and San Angelo. Icy roads are likely, especially bridges and overpasses.
