San Angelo LIVE! Publisher Among 7 in Local Media Honored by San Angelo ISD

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo ISD school board honored six San Angelo journalists and media executives last night, all being named into the 2019 Media Honor Roll. They were Joe Hyde, publisher of San Angelo LIVE!; Fred Key and Rick Mantooth, the Top 2 at Foster Communications; Cody Broadway at KIDY-TV, Gregorio Gutierrez the publisher at Conexión Hispania; and Cody Adams at KLST-TV.

The Texas Association of School Boards, or TASB, sponsors the school district’s annual honor roll. The criteria for winning the designation are to provide fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools. This is measured by how well each media representative understands the school district’s mission and goals, and knows the leadership of the district in order to provide their views on issues as needed.

Last year, the district’s biggest effort was to win voter approval of a $150 million infrastructure bond. We supported the bond in our opinion pieces because we felt the bond was critical for continued economic growth in San Angelo by fostering education excellence with improved facilities. Both attempts to pass the bond failed, primarily because of citizens’ reluctance to hike their own tax rate atop a perception that property taxes were already too high.

The school district also benefitted from our sports coverage. The high school football program at Central High School in particular is akin to San Angelo’s front porch. By elevating the high school sports coverage here we were able to help recognize the talent and hard work of the region’s young athletes. Our sports coverage attracted 400,000 page views of all 27 teams in the Concho Valley in 2018, from September through December.

For this year’s high school football season, we’ve added the Cover1 video series produced by our own Manny Diaz to the sports coverage mix. We are producing two weekly Cover1 series for the 2019 season: Cover1: Bobcats will follow the San Angelo Central varsity football team; Cover1: Mix will cover the other 26 teams in the region. Each episode in the series will feature five segments, usually centered on a game.

Like all communities in Texas, especially our more rural west Texas communities, our public school districts sit at the center of our daily life. We will continue to provide you the best coverage of our local public educators.

None of this could happen without the advertising and sponsorship support of many local businesses. We especially thank our advertisers for allowing us to expand and sustain our local news coverage.
