in Pothole Problem Plagues San Angelo
"In 2015, under Mayor Morrison, part of the multi-year $80 million streets repaving plan was to reconstitute a full time street crew to attack potholes as the City embarked on major street reconstruction on roadways like Bell Street."......... and we are getting to it now it appears, 4 years later, way to hit a problem head on!
"Entry-level street repair laborers make $10.61 per hour. That is not enough to keep them at the City .....“They’ll get their CDL while here at the City and then leave for better pay in the oil field,”............. well DUH! I can get just over $22K working for the city on the roads here, with the type of driver we have and the risk that involves, ( anyone else know a city that has a section of the news dedicated ONLY to who crashed and where?), OR , I can go to the oilfields and get around $72K a year there with probably less risk; that is a difficult decision!
"City Manager Valenzuela said the problem couldn’t be fixed only by dedicating more money to the problem alone. He said his staff is looking for ways to improve worker retention."........ I have an idea,.........pay them more to start, with regular increases as they progress through training and work; connect their CDL to a time served contract, that is to say around 2 years to serve after qualifying for example, or they pay you the full sum it cost to train them on the day they leave.

We have a beautiful lily pad pond here in Angelo that draws international visitors from all over the world.
but my story has to do with a different lily pad pond.
We lived way out in the country and just about a half mile was a pond that naturally grew these beautiful lily pads. except it was difficult to fish there, although the pond was full of a lot of fish, inevitably the hook would either get stuck on one of those vines, or if you did catch a good one he got away.
I was having a lot of fun of recreation being 5 years old and visiting this nature place. It was just then, that I sensed danger somehow and when I looked up a large male coyote was bobbing his head and drawing a bead on me. Then I looked to my left and to my right and it was a pack. There was at least 3 or 4 and I realized I was in extreme danger. So, i yelled out loud , dad!!, dad!!!. Well dad was nowhere to be found, but my little dog was a mixture of Alaskan husky and malimute and he took off in a flat run straight towards me. In a hard charge, he literally bit the leader straight in half and killed them and then the rest of them ran off. Woof, I didn't realize a dog could do that.
What a freak’n crock of crap! Valenzuela is clueless. Anyone with a brain knows you have to pay more than McDonalds if you expect to keep anyone. I think it’s time for him to go milk another town to death! I haven’t seen this so-called road repair crew since Springtime & the repairs where an embarrassment to the city name!
LMAO.... Excuses, excuses, excuses.... Kelton says too much rain then the weather was too hot and dry, or there's no asphalt available at the time it's needed..... Oh, and then there are employee's leave like flocks of birds flying South for the Winter.... AND then there's Mr. suave & debonair Valenzuela who is scratching his head trying to figure out ways to retain employees..... Maybe thinking along the lines of decent pay might be a starting point. It's pretty sad when one can go to work at a convenience store sitting on a stool selling gas and beer and make better pay than what a city employee is paid for hard manual labor..........
You simply don't pay enough.
But go ahead, build more infrastructure, hire more managers and engineers. That's what all the big cities do and guess what? The problem only gets worse over time. Sadly we might need to actually hire a rocket scientist to explain it to city council if we can tear them away from beautification of the Concho Puddle or The Glowing Money Pit, a.k.a., Hickory project.
Btw, see all the police out giving tickets lately? "See city council, look how much money we bring in!" Oh yeah, somebody's pushing for a major cash infusion this fiscal year.
in Abilene Mom Hospitalized for Nearly a Month Due to Vaping
What do you need to vape in the first place? With the deaths lately, it seems like a good way to stop.
San Angelo has had a "pothole crisis" for years! Not a new problem!
Responsible journalism would've included exactly what she was vaping in this story. I've been vaping for 8 years and my smoker's cough disappeared within a year of switching to vaping. As long as you buy from reputable sources who put their products through rigorous testing you shouldn't have any problems. This type of dishonest journalism is exactly what's going to force me back to cigarettes once vaping is outlawed. I would bet my life this woman's problems are from vaping THC or from black market sources.
