Lake View’s Breakthrough Season Ended by Lampasas

SAN ANGELO, TX — Lake View’s winningest football season in 29 years came to an end Thursday with a 52-14 loss to Lampasas in the opening round of the playoffs at San Angelo Stadium.

The Chiefs fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter and never recovered.

To make matters worse, quarterback Chris Alvizo was injured after a hard hit midway through the second quarter. He ran off the field under his own power, but he appeared shaken up and never returned.

After the game, Lake View head coach Hector Guevara did not give any details on the nature of Alvizo’s injury.

Lake View’s season ended with a record of 7-4, the most wins the Chiefs have had since 1996.

“I think the kids played with their hearts, and our community should be proud of them for all they’ve done and continue to do,” Guevara said. “They played with a lot of class and a lot of love and a lot of effort, and they played for each other. That was the most important thing.”

Lampasas improved to 9-2. The Badgers will play Canyon West Plains next week in the area round.

Lake View senior wide receiver Braylon White led the Chiefs in his final game with 12 catches for 138 yards. He stepped up by hauling in eight of those passes after backup QB Caleb Schumpert entered the game.

Afterward, White talked about the experience of this season.

"It meant so much. We were able to turn Lake View around in so many ways," White said. "All eyes were on us this year, and we finally got that recognition we've been wanting for years, and I feel like we proved that and showed that this season. ... I just love this group."

Lake View started the season 4-0 for the first time since 1983, and the Chiefs had a chance to win their first district title in 21 years before coming up just short in a 35-28 loss to Andrews in the regular-season finale.

That loss gave Lake View the No. 2 seed from its district, and the Chiefs drew a tough third-place team in Lampasas.

The Badgers scored the first six times they touched the ball to fly out to a 42-7 lead. Lake View, meanwhile, had six turnovers to stifle its typically high-scoring offense, which was averaging 46 points per game heading into the night.

Alvizo threw an interception in the end zone with Lake View knocking on the door to pull within 14-7 late in the first quarter. It was one of two picks by Lampasas' Jonathan Bowling.

Two plays later, Badgers QB Bryson Roberts took off on an 81-yard TD run for a 21-0 lead.

"Momentum went their way and they never relinquished it, and then we couldn't regroup," Guevara said.

Lake View scored on its next drive — highlighted by a successful fake punt to keep the drive alive — and Alvizo threw a 7-yard TD pass to Cristian Esparza.

However, Alvizo was injured on the Chiefs' next drive and fumbled as he was hit.

He finished the night 15-of-21 passing for 158 yards, giving him over 2,800 yards for the season.

Schumpert came in and 15-of-31 passing for 134 yards. He had a TD pass to promising freshman Andrew Young, who had four catches for 70 yards.

Schumpert was intercepted three times, though he was also taking some shots downfield with the Chiefs trailing big.

"He came into the game in a tough position, but I thought he did as good as he could," Guevara said.

Lake View ultimately produced 352 yards of offense, but turnovers limited the Chiefs to only 14 points.

Moving forward, the Chiefs will have to replace playmakers like running back Izaiah Rios and wide receivers White and Nick Leyva, who were part of a strong senior class.

"I love these guys to death," White said. "These are my brothers, man. This is such a special group. I couldn't ask for a much better team. The Lord blessed us with this Lake View team."

The Chiefs will return players like Alvizo, Young and Chris Rodela on offense, and difference makers like Conner Williams on defense.

Across the field, Lampasas churned out 373 rushing yards and added 212 more through the air.

Roberts was a big-play machine as he was 7-of-14 passing for 202 yards and three TDs. He had seven carries for 91 yards and a TD.

Wesley Stephens led Lampasas on the ground with five carries for 107 yards and two TDs.
