Embattled Sheriff's Candidate Vows To Withdraw From Race After Primary

BAIRD, TX – Days after publicly admitting he had misled the citizens of Callahan County regarding his military record, Chief Deputy Rick Jowers announced he will withdraw his candidacy if he wins the nomination in the Republican primary.

According to KTXS, Jowers, who is currently a candidate in the Republican primary, and his opponent Leroy Foley have both been under fire for allegations of stolen valor. In a forum in January Jowers said: “(Leroy Foley) is military like me. We were both Airborne Rangers.” Military records show neither candidate was ever Airborne.

On Tuesday, Jowers issued the following statement:

The current state of the Sheriff’s election in Callahan County is not what I had hoped it to be. It is apparent that full confidence of the citizens of Callahan County is not in the future of the candidate elected in the Republican Primary on March 3, 2020.

At this time, it is too late to withdraw from the primary election; however, it is my intention, should I receive the nomination during the party primary, I will subsequently withdraw my candidacy before the General Election; and, allow the party leadership to select a replacement nominee for the General Election who can unite our community to move forward.

I have always wanted to do what is best for the Callahan County Sheriff’s Department and the citizens of Callahan County.

Thank you and God bless.

His opponent Leroy Foley, who was employed by the Clyde Police Department, resigned from his position after being placed on administrative leave. He is currently being investigated by the police after claimed he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Silver Star.
