Hurricane Harvey Downgraded to Cat 1; Still Dumping Flooding Rain

SAN ANGELO, TX -- NOAA says Harvey has weakened this morning to a category 1 Hurricane after making landfall at 10 p.m. Friday night.

As of 7 a.m. Saturday morning, Harvey was centered about 95 miles southeast of San Antonio moving north northwest at 6 mph with sustained winds of 80 mph.

NOAA says Harvey is “moving slowly over Texas producing torrential rains and catastrophic flooding is expected over the next few days.”

Harvey is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 15 to 30 inches and isolated maximum amounts of 40 inches over the middle and upper Texas coast through next Wednesday.

During the same time period Harvey is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 5 to 15 inches in far south Texas, the Texas Hill Country and southwest and central Louisiana.

Rainfall of this magnitude will cause catastrophic and life-threatening flooding.
