Some College Football Conferences Will Play During the Pandemic

SAN ANGELO, TX – For the first half of 2020, sports have been canceled. Don't worry though, this fall looks like it will be packed full of college football.

Since March, sports have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many health officials from across the country shut them down out of fear of large outbreaks. College sports were ultimately canceled while professional sports were only postponed.

Now sports like MLB and NBA have resumed their seasons. In the MLB they have had to postpone a number of games while the NBA has been COVID-19 free in their bubble. The NFL has started training camp but has canceled the pre-season and will instead jump right into regular season games.

College sports are a little bit more complicated than professional sports. In professional leagues, teams have the funds to constantly test players and staff for the coronavirus. With the 130 Division 1 Football teams with more than 100 players on each team testing numbers add up quickly.

This has caused a number of NCAA conferences to opt out or postpone their season until the Spring. Two of these are power five conferences; the PAC-12 and Big Ten.

Good news for Texans is that the Big 12 and the SEC have decided that they are moving forward as planned. Coming along for the ride with them will be the ACC, the American Athletic Conference, and the Sunbelt Conference.

Unfortunately for local college football, the Lone Star Conference has decided to move Angelo State Fall Sports to the spring. Here is the full article: Lone Star Conference Announces Decision on Fall Sports

Also the UIL has confirmed that Texas High School Football will continue as planned with small schools starting now and big schools starting in September. The first high school game is scheduled for August 28.

NFL is set to begin their schedule on September 10 when the Houston Texans travel to the Kansas City Chiefs.

24/7 Sports reported earlier today that the first game of the regular season for the Big 12 will be September 26. It will be the Texas Longhorns traveling to Lubbock to play Texas Tech.
