PLAINVIEW, TX — Wayland Baptist basketball player and Lubbock native J.J. Culver became just the second player in NAIA history to score 100 points in a single game Tuesday night. Culver, who is the older brother of Texas Tech star and 6th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft Jarrett Culver, was unstoppable in their 124-60 win over Southwestern Adventist.
Culver, a 6'5" senior, finished with exactly 100 points after playing 38 of the 40 possible minutes. He made 34-62 field goal attempts, including 12-33 from three-point range. He also added 20 free throws.
Culver is the first to accomplish this feat in an NAIA game since Clarence "Bevo" Francis accomplished it in 1954 for Rio Grande University in Ohio. Francis did it with 113 points against Hillsdale.
Culver is now averaging 36.1 on the season. "J.J. has awesome offensive talent to be able to put it in the basket that many times, and I thought our guys did a great job of getting him the ball in places where he could score," coach Ty Harrelson told ESPN. "He did a great job of reading the defense and getting open."
