Week 8 Concho Valley HS Football Preview

SAN ANGELO, TX — Several area teams have moved up to the top of their respective districts and are eager to defend their spots this week.  Two unbeatens, Wall and Jim Ned, highlight a loaded week 8 schedule with 6-1 Miles and 5-1 Eldorado squaring off as well.  The Mason Punchers could also take sole control over the number one position in the 14-2A DI district with a win over Junction and a Center Point loss.  Continue reading for a full break down of all the action.

SA Central 4-3 at Richland 1-5 (Friday at 7:00, Birdville ISD Complex)

San Angelo Central moved up to second place in the 3-6A district last week with its win over Abilene.  Quarterback Malachi Brown had another sensational evening throwing the ball to wide receivers Tanner Dabbert, Jalen Leifeste, and Christian Gabaldon.  He accounted for 309 yards through the air. The Bobcats cannot afford to overlook the struggling Richland Rebels, though. A win this week could put them in first place in the district.  Current #1 Trinity lost to Haltom last week and plays 5-1 Weatherford in what will be a stiff challenge for the Trojans. Central and Weatherford wins would have them at 1 and 2 in the district, respectively.

Wall 6-0 at Jim Ned 6-0 (Friday at 7:30, Jim Ned Indian Stadium)

The best game of the week will take place in Tuscola Friday night.  Wall and Jim Ned are both undefeated juggernauts in the 3-3A DI district.  The Indians did not allow a single point until week four while averaging 53 points, themselves.  In their three games since, the average margin of victory was 20 points. They beat Breckenridge 32-0 last week.  As for the Hawks, Clyde proved to be no match in a 35-7 win for Wall on Friday.  No team has been able to score more than 14 points on their tremendous defense all season.  This will be both teams biggest test so far this season.

Ballinger 4-2 vs. Grape Creek 1-5 (Friday at 7:30, Bearcat Stadium)

The Bearcats ended a two-game losing streak with a 31-0 shutout at home against Bangs.  Senior running back Cooper Bean averaged over 10 yards per carry on his way to a 94 yard, 1 touchdown evening.  Ballinger is tied for 4th place in the division with a 1-2 record. Grape Creek dropped its third district game to TLCA on Friday.  Its offense struggled and only managed one touchdown in the 8-6 loss. The defense played well, however, and allowed zero points. TLCA took the lead on a fumble recovery in the end zone.

TLCA 1-5 vs. Cisco 5-1 (Friday at 7:30, Lake View Stadium)

The Eagles went on the road Friday and spoiled Grape Creek’s homecoming for their first win of the season.  Junior Seth Levesque was their best option even though the offense was scoreless. Levesque is listed as a wide receiver, but most of his touches come out of the backfield as a runner.  TLCA regularly pitches the ball to him out of the I formation and allows him to pass downfield. Cisco will be a very tough challenge for them. Their only loss of the season was a 20-13 week two defeat at Wall.  Last week against Coleman, quarterback Gibson Hearne averaged 30 yards per carry for a total of 150 and 2 touchdowns.

Sonora 2-4 vs. Ingram Moore 3-3 (Friday at 7:30, Bronco Stadium)

Both teams are looking for their first district win after losing their openers in week 7.  Sonora fell to 3-3 Blanco 28-6, and Ingram Moore lost a close 23-20 game in Brady. Ingram Moore quarterback Tim Leatherman ran 25 times for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Bulldogs.  Sonora will need to get its offense back on track in order to have a chance to win this game. They have averaged 244 yards and 17 points since running back Brock Aschenbeck went down in week four.  They had just 180 yards against Blanco.

Mason 4-2 vs. Junction 3-3 (Friday at 7:30, Puncher Dome)

The Punchers are coming off a thrilling 23-22 victory against Brackett, while Junction throttled Sabinal 46-0.  Mason quarterback/defensive back Matthew Kerr pushed his team past Brackett with an 83 yard pick six and a last second touchdown heave to senior Tad Kirby.  Mason is tied for first place in the 14-2A DI district. Junction could potentially steal that spot with a victory on Friday.

Miles 6-1 vs. Eldorado 5-1 (Friday at 7:30, Bulldog Stadium)

Miles bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 36-15 beating of Menard.  QB Davian Martinez had one of his best performances of the year. The senior accounted for 262 total yards (176 passing, 86 rushing) and three passing touchdowns.  The Bulldogs are now 1-0 in the district. Eldorado is coming off an extended bye week after beating Haskell 35-14 two Thursdays ago. This will be a very even contest.  Miles will have an edge by being able to play at home in front of a rowdy Bulldog crowd.

Water Valley 4-3 vs. Garden City 4-2 (Friday at 7:30, Diddle Young Field)

Water Valley suffered a 56-8 defeat to 8th ranked Sterling City for its third loss of the season.  Garden City, meanwhile, had a bye after upsetting the 3rd ranked Strawn School Greyhounds 78-32. This will be Garden City’s first district game of the season.  Water Valley is tied with Westbrook for last place at 0-1.

*Lake View and Christoval have a bye.
