Everything You Need to Know About Wall's State Title Matchup

ROUND ROCK, TX -- After a 9-inning thriller on Friday, the no. 1-ranked Wall Hawks are in their second-ever state championship baseball game.

Thanks to a walk-off RBI single by senior Gage Weishuhn in the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday against Kirbyville, Wall (38-1) will meet with Blanco (33-4) at 9:00 a.m. today for the state crown.

Blanco were also walk-off winners in a 3-2 result over Van Alstyne on Friday.

With San Angelo LIVE's knowledge from covering Wall baseball this season, here's what you need to look for:

What's on the line?

Both teams are searching for their first state baseball championship.

Wall is in their second-ever state tournament while Blanco is in their third. However, Wall has been here recently.

Blanco's last state appearance was in 2007. The Hawks advanced to the state final in their first appearance in 2017. Wall wants to rewrite their history following a 10-0 loss to Nacogdoches Central Heights in the 2017 title game.

How they got here

The Wall Hawks cruised through their schedule up until their regional final series with Brock last week. The Hawks won the series two games to one. Wall is 10-1 in the postseason

Wall's mark of 37-1 entering the state tournament was the best of the field, giving them the top seed. The Hawks got to that point by averaging 11.5 runs per game. They have beaten teams by 10 or more runs in 21 games.

Blanco came in as possibly the hottest team in the postseason on a 10-game winning streak entering Friday, which grew to an 11-game streak.

However, the Panthers have only won 11 games by 10 games or more.

Players to Watch

Both teams have the opportunity to be dangerous offensively.

Wall has 12 batters hitting over .300 and Blanco has 11 batters hitting the same. But Friday's semifinals could be an indication of what's to come Saturday.

Blanco is led by leadoff hitter Eddie Calzoncit. The senior infielder entered the tournament hitting .494. On Friday, he was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a triple in Blanco's 3-2 win over Van Alstyne.

Wall will be at an advantage on paper with their depth. In Friday's walk-off win, the Hawks hit .333 as a team. Eight of their nine batters recorded hits. Just four Blanco Panthers tallied hits on Friday.

For the Hawks, they will look to their bottom of the order to keep the spark alive. Senior third baseman Charlie Mascorro is on an 11-game hit streak after a double in Friday's semifinal. Caleb Heuertz was also 3-for-5 with a run scored in the win over Kirbyville.
