Wall Two-Sport Standout Honored in Show Arena

WALL, TX -- Wall senior Baylor Halfmann has shown livestock since he was in the third grade and has been a two-sport standout for the Hawks since he got to high school. The former just earned the recent Wall High School graduate recognition by one of the world’s biggest livestock shows.

Halfmann, along with Brady’s Ryder Ross and Llano’s Thomas Edwards, was honored with a scholarship by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on May 14 for the goat he showed at the prestigious show.

“It’s definitely rewarding,” Halfmann said. “It’s a lot of hard work since third grade to be able to do all these projects, to go across the state.”

Halfmann was one of 420 scholarship recipients from the HLSR and one of just 30 in their exhibitor program. The HLSR gave out $8.4 million in scholarships this year.

To earn the scholarship, Halfmann has had to sacrifice a lot. That means he missed practices and games during baseball and basketball to get to some of these shows.

“It’s definitely rewarding to get money back from it. Not necessarily money, but some kind of recognition for doing that all those years,” he said. “It’s a good experience for me to get that scholarship.”

Showing livestock has taken Halfmann to just about every corner of the Lone Star State. Heading into college and the real world, Halfmann hopes experiencing the different cultures will serve him well.

“It’s definitely been good to see all the cultures and the areas,” Halfmann said. “Like, in San Antonio, there’s so many different things that we don’t have here in Angelo. There’s so many ways to get around. In Houston, all the people there. It’s definitely good to learn how to deal with the traffic and all the people and everything while you’re there. It’s good to be able to see the state.”

Halfmann and the no. 1-ranked Wall Hawks baseball team will look to keep their season going in their regional final series with Brock this Thursday through Friday.
