STATE TENNIS: Mason Continues Dominance at State

 

COLLEGE STATION, TX -- The Mason High School tennis teams lived up to their reputation, bringing home a total of 14 medals, including four state titles.

Matthew Kerr won boy's singles by defeating Thrall's Christian Dubec 6-3 and 6-0. The team of Roman Coe and Ethan Powell knocked off their classmates Kyle Montoya and Slone Stultz to take home the title in boy's doubles. Maddy Heath and Parker Standard did the same to fellow Cowgirls Megan Canfield and Sterling Smith for the girl's doubles title. Rudy Rochat and Raegan Glentz followed suit to take the mixed doubles title from classmates Chet Weitz and Bailey Taylor.

Kate Gillespie took home silver in girl's silver in Class 2A after falling to Thorndale's Landry Laywell in straight sets.

For Powell, it's his third straight state championship in tennis. The recent Southwestern University football signee was also a vital member of Mason's 2018 state championship football team before garnering district MVP honors in basketball and a bronze medal as a part of Mason's state 4x400-meter relay.. With four state titles in team tennis, Powell has won nine total state titles.

Heath and Standard knocked off the Miles duo of Halle Hudson and Katelynn Graves in the semifinals to advance to the finals.

Wall's Dynamic Duo Repeats as Champs

Wall's duo of Colton Chitsey and Shawn Labedelle are bringing more hardware back to the Concho Valley after repeating as Class 3A boy's double champs.

Chitsey and Labedelle knocked off Brownfield's Jason Cabe and Jordan Clark 6-2 and 6-4 to go back-to-back.

The mixed doubles team of Mark Holtmann and Carsyn Watts fell in the state quarterfinals to Ingram Moore's Austin Fairchild and Caryle Pfiester.

Brady's Marshall Wins Second Straight State Title

For the second year in a row, Brady has a state champion.

Junior Jack Marshall defeated Holliday's Tyler Webb 6-3 and 6-4 to claim the Class 3A Boy's single title, his second in as many years.

To get there, Marshall knocked off Hooks' Riley Hamilton in the quarterfinal and Ingram Moore's Lawsin Wilt in the semifinals.

Marshall is coming off a silver medal in the 200-meter dash at the state track meet last week.

The UIL state tennis tournament continues with finals all day today in College Station.

Irion County Duo Brings Home Silver

Irion County's boy's double team of Nathan Chacon and Andrew Dareing came up just short of a state title today.

After cruising past teams from Utopia and Ector in the quarter and semifinals, Chacon and Dareing found stiff competition in Knippa's Jason Samarripa and Vincent Zavala.

Chacon and Daring fell 6-4 and 6-3 to finish second in the state and bring hardware to the town of Mertzon.
