Central's Martin Named 3-6A Newcomer of the Year

SAN ANGELO, TX -- After battling through adversity in the 2019 season, the Central Lady Cat softball team is getting recognition for their hard work.

Seven Lady Cats were tabbed with honors on the All-District 3-6A team.

Highlighting the group was freshman Taylor Martin, who received the lone superlative honor for the Lady Cats. Martin was named the District 3-6A Newcomer of the Year.

In her debut year, Martin became a constant at the plate for Central, hitting .364 in 66 at-bats with eight extra base hits and seven RBIs. Behind the plate, head coach David Millsap said Martin has "loads of potential." In 133 chances this season, Martin committed just three errors and had 19 assists.

Central's season looked to start on the right foot, winning their district opener against Weatherford. The Lady Cats then dropped their next four district games and a non-district clash with Abilene Cooper before beating Haltom to stop the skid.

That would spark a run where Central won five of their final seven games to force a play-in with Fort Worth Richland. The Lady Cats would fall 16-6 to end their season.

Central finished the year 12-15-1 overall.
