WATCH: From Timeout To Signing Off To Play College Basketball

SAN ANGELO, TX -  From high school hoops to the college hardwood, San Angelo Central's Deveraux Minix signed off his national letter of intent to continue his playing career at Sul Ross State University on Monday night. 

The six-foot-one senior who averaged 17.8 points per game in the 2018-19 season made the announcement before family, friends, teammates, and coaches. 

"I'm blessed to receive this opportunity, and I wouldn't choose any other place," said Minix.

Central head coach Dustin Faught said coaches from Sul Ross State have made trips to San Angelo to see Minix practice and have kept up with him this season, but in addition to preparing the shooting guard for the next level, it's the opportunity to watch him succeed that makes this decision fun for everyone. 

"I'm glad that he's going to get to have some conference games around the area so we'll get to go watch him play and keep up with his career."

Sul Ross State plays in the American Southwest Conference, the same league as member schools like Hardin-Simmons and McMurry in Abilene along with Howard Payne in Brownwood. 

But in order to truly tell the story of Deveraux's journey to the college hardwood one has to go back to his time at Bonham Elementary School where SA Central Assistant Coach Al Lara was first told about the future Bobcat.

"The first time I met Deveraux was at Bonham Elementary," said Lara. I was visiting our elementary feeder school to Lee Middle School. I went to look for Deveraux one day and they escorted me into a room which was a timeout room."

Lara's first interaction with Deveraux was no doubt about sports but quickly turned into what he was doing in timeout. 

"I remember that day like it was yesterday," says Minix."I was acting up so I got in timeout and that was the last time I got in trouble because of coach Lara so I think him for that."

Moving forward Deveraux's message to the future of the SA Central basketball program was simple.

"If you really want to play college basketball and if you really want to work hard it's not impossible. You can do anything you set your mind to."

One matchup to watch for this season is when Deveraux and the Sul Ross State Lobos matchup with fellow San Angelo native (Lake View Grad) and his Howard Payne Yellowjackets.
