WATCH: Concho Boxing Club Creates Platform For USA Boxing

SAN ANGELO, TX - As popularity grows for sports like football, baseball, and basketball it's sports like boxing that get lost in the mix. For Concho Boxing Club they're not only creating professional fighters but giving San Angelo a reason to watch at the Olympic level.

Concho Boxing head coach Sel Trejo has helped guide the club as a fighter and a coach since 1972. His club currently has 23 athletes and 5 professional fighters ranging from ages 8 to 28.

Trejo's mission is to introduce more and more local youth to the sport while giving meaning to competition.

"This is a prefight for a lot of these athletes who are going to participate in the Junior Olympics in three weeks," said Trejo. Over the weekend Concho Boxing hosted a number of clubs from around the state to gear up for the upcoming regional event ahead of the Junior Olympics in Madison, Wisconsin.

Although only three San Angelo fighters competed on Saturday only to come up short, Trejo exclaimed it was their first look at what it's like going toe-to-toe in the ring.

Paired with competing in their first fights, it's what his fighters are doing to become the best.

"They come in here and start learning self-discipline, respect for themselves, respect for others and sportsmanship," said Trejo. "They can take it as far as they want to go with it."
