AREA BASEBALL: Neslage's First No-Hitter Helps Central Keep Hold of First Place

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Trey Neslage threw his first career no-hitter to help the Central Bobcats to a 1-0 win over Abilene on Tuesday and keep their hold on first place in district.

The senior southpaw had come close a no-hitter prior to his time at Central, but this one helped Neslage find a lot of confidence in his game.

“I’m finally pleased with the performance. The last two have not been up to my full potential I’d say,” Neslage said.

Late in the game, Neslage knew he was working on a no-hitter so he tried to keep his pitches out of the zone. That led to a few more walks.

“That’s why I walked two guys in the last inning,” he said. “Just making sure I wasn’t gonna let ‘em hit it, but close enough where I could get called strikes.”

Neslage has been battling signs of fatigue in his arm. With Central’s bye week coming up, he will get some much needed rest.

“Trey told me earlier this week, ‘Man, I just need some rest, coach.’” head coach Patrick Penry said. “I told him, I said, ‘you can rest next week on our off week.’”

“I’m not gonna lie, my arm feels like it’s deteriorating a little bit more and more,” Neslage said. “Once I get this rest, I’ll be back on my stuff for sure.”

Central picked up the lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI ground out from Nixon Brannon to score Blake Mikeska.

The Bobcats were held to just four hits in the game. Jakob Charles picked up a pair of hits, going 2-for-2. Dawson Daniel and Cole Nelson had Centrals two other hits.

Central (18-11-1, 6-3) will go for the series sweep against Abilene on the road this Friday.

Heuertz Homers Twice, Drives in Six to Help No. 1 Wall Inch Closer to District Title

Fresh off a playoff-clinching win over Grape Creek and a jump to the state no. 1-ranking on Monday, the Wall Hawks picked up a 14-2 win over Sonora in a make-up game after weather postponed Saturday's meeting.

Wall was held in check and only held a 1-0 lead going into the fourth inning. The Hawks then sent 13 batters to the plate to score nine runs.

Caleb Heuertz was the shot in the arm for the Hawks, as he went 3-for-4 with six RBIs, two home runs and two runs scored for the Hawks. Both home runs came during the explosive fourth inning for Wall.

Colton Diebitsch and Kye Hebert each picked up two RBIs for the Hawks.

Brock Aschenbeck was the only Bronco to pick up multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Luke Young got the win on the bump for Wall after going 5.1 innings where he allowed two runs on five hits and four walks and seven strikeouts. Logan McDonald was charged with the loss after 3.2 innings of work where he allowed nine runs on 11 hits with one strikeout.

Wall (24-0, 9-0) will travel to Ballinger on Friday. Sonora hosts Brady this Friday.
