Lake View Boys Lift Hardware to Complete Turnaround Season

SAN ANGELO, TX -- A pair of second half goals lifted the Lake View Chiefs to a 2-0 victory over Lubbock Estacado at Old Bobcat Stadium on Tuesday, completing a worst-to-first turnaround for the new 4A school.

Heading into Tuesday, Lake View had already sealed the district championship after going 2-18 a year before. Completing that turnaround is sweet for the Chiefs.

"It means a lot [to the community]," Lake View head coach Kyle Jones said. "These fans have come out and supported us for two years. To go 2-18 last year and now district champs, it couldn't be sweeter. I'm proud of these guys. They've earned it, they've worked hard for two years under me."

The Chiefs struggled to find any rhythm in the first half against an Estacado team playing for a draw and went into halftime in a scoreless tie.

"We didn't play well. I felt like there were times we could've done more," Jones said. "But to play against a team that's out there to waste time, I thought we played very well. It's just gonna build, build, build into playoffs."

That changed when Daniel Ramos finished off a pass from Dorian Madrid in the 47th  minute. Jesus Espinosa put an exclamation mark on Lake View's district championship season by scoring the second goal from nearly 60 yards away and thanks to a misplay from the Estacado goalkeeper.

"It's just icing on the cake," Jones said of Espinosa's goal with a grin. "It just goes to show these boys earned it, they've worked hard and anything can happen.

Lake View (7-8, 5-1) will take on Borger in the Bi-District round of playoffs.
