Stacked Lineup Makes Up 2019 All-Concho Valley Girl's Basketball Team

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The girl's basketball season came to an end last week and what a year it was for the Concho Valley.

A total of 15 teams made the postseason in the Concho Valley. Christoval, Mason, Wall and Veribest made the regional tournament.

Both Mason (38-2) and Wall (32-2) made runs to the state tournament before both falling in the semifinals.

Veribest made history with a 23-7 season that saw them win their first district championship in 17 years as well as make their first regional tournament appearance.

To celebrate the season, we have compiled a list of the best players in the Concho Valley. We started this celebration on Thursday by naming Wall senior Sawyer Lloyd as our MVP.

Here is the 2019 All-Concho Valley girl's basketball team.

Newcomer of the Year

Braylee Hood, Fr., P/G, Robert Lee

Hood made a big splash in her first year at Robert Lee.

The freshman split time between post and guard positions for the Lady Steers and flourished. Hood averaged 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals per game. Those numbers earned Newcomer of the Year honors in 11-1A.

Hood was an instrumental part in getting Robert Lee into playoffs and to the area round for the fifth straight year. She will likely be the focal point for the Lady Steers for the next three years.

Point Guards (5):

Victoria Dehanis, Jr., Eldorado

[[{"fid":"55611","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Eldorado's Victoria Dehanis (11) passes the ball against Miles. Jan. 15, 2019 (LIVE! When you look at Eldorado’s first playoff season since 2017, Dehanis was the one pulling the strings.

The junior point guard averaged 11.6 points, 3.9 steals and 3.8 assists per game. Her points per game average was good for second with the Lady Eagles while she led the team in steals and assists.

Dehanis was named a second team All-District 7-2A selection.

Presley Anastas, Sr., Mason

[[{"fid":"53256","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Mason's Presley Anastas (14) puts up a jump shot against Lake View. Anastas was the lynchpin to Mason’s high-powered offense in her second year as a starter, acting as a coach on the floor to help Mason back to the state tournament for the second year in a row.

Anastas wasn’t the highest scorer on this list with 9.2 points per game, but made up for it with an average of 2.7 assists, two steals and 1.3 rebounds per game.

That balanced play sprung the likes of Ruby Magnus and Mason’s high-powered offense.

Catlyn Ward, Sr., Veribest

[[{"fid":"55610","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Veribest's Catlyn Ward cuts down the net at the Junell Center after winning the regional quarterfinal. Feb. 18, 2019 (LIVE! Photo/Sam Fowler)

Ward left a legacy at Veribest with her district MVP season, which led to Veribest making their first regional tournament.

The Howard Payne signee led in every statistical category except shooting percentage.

Ward scored 13.4 points per game on a 38 percent from the field. She also averaged three assists per game, 3.3 rebounds per game and 2.3 rebounds per game.

What led to that stellar performance what her ability to share the ball, head coach Jim Eubank said.

Parris Parmer, Sr., Central

[[{"fid":"53980","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Central's Parris Parmer (22) tries to cut into the lane against Hurst L.D. Bell. Feb. 5, 2019 (LIVE! Photo/Sam Fowler)

Parmer was the definitive leader for the Lady Cats, operating all over the floor, but mostly out of the point position.

Parmer led the Lady Cats with 14 points per game, five rebounds per game, 2.5 steals and three assists per game.

Those numbers helped Parmer, a three-year feature for Central, earn offensive player of the year honors in District 3-6A.

Ruby Ramon-Duque, So., Menard

Ramon-Duque is regarded for her basketball IQ and understanding of the game by head coach Kristy Sweatman.

The sophomore averaged 9.5 points, two assists, three steals, one block and five rebounds per game. Having that balanced of a stat line proves Sweatman’s thoughts of her sophomore floor general.

Those numbers also helped the sophomore pick up first team all-district honors for the second year in a row.

Ramon-Duque will be a key player going forward for Menard in her final two years of high school.

Honorable Mention (3): Jenna Battle, Fr., Ballinger; Skyler Brooks, Jr., Miles; Jayden Speary, Sr., Bronte

SG/Wing (6):

Sydney Bowman, Sr., Ballinger

Bowman picked up her third straight first team All-District honor in 2019 after helping Ballinger to second place behind state semifinalist Wall.

Bowman averaged seven points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.2 assists per game.

Her defensive play was commended by head coach Jerry McSherry after she moved to play the role of a three guard in McSherry’s system.

Those numbers helped the Lady Bearcats advance to the area round of playoffs, where they fell to Bushland.

Graci Jones, So., Christoval

[[{"fid":"54752","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Christoval's Graci Jones (12) puts up a jump shot against Seagraves. Photo/Sam Fowler)

If you ask Christoval head coach Scott Richardson, he’ll tell you Jones was Christoval’s MVP during their first regional tournament run since 2016.

Jones avoided the dreaded sophomore slump by continuing to be Christoval’s sharpshooter. The first team All-District 7-2A selection knocked down 83 three-pointers in 34 games played. That helped Jones to an average of 11.8 points per game to go with 3.4 rebounds.

With just three seniors listed on their roster, Jones will likely continue to be the focal point of Christoval’s offense.

Jordan Driver, So., Garden City

[[{"fid":"53495","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Garden City's Jordan Driver (10) goes up for a layup against Lamesa Klondike. Jan. 25, 2019 (LIVE! Photo/Sam Fowler)

Driver picked up first team All-District 8-1A honors after helping the Lady Bearkats to a ranking as high as fourth this season.

She did that by flying around the court. Driver averaged 10.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 2.6 assists per game.

The 5-5 sophomore will anchor a returning group of veterans after Garden City loses four seniors to graduation.

Kennadi Wheeless, Fr., Veribest

[[{"fid":"54950","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Veribest's Kennadi Wheeless (0) looks to pass against Blackwell. Feb. 18, 2019 (LIVE! Wheeless continued a trend of youthful excellence in District 11-1A and was the final piece Veribest needed to make their historic run in 2018-19.

The freshman picked up first team All-District honors after leading the team in shooting percentage. Wheeless shot 44 percent from the field, including 40 percent from behind the arc.

That led to Wheeless averaging 10.4 points per game to go with 2.8 rebounds per game. What’s more impressive is she committed a low amount of turnovers, just north of two per game.

If Wheeless continues her upward trend, she will be a force to be reckoned with over the next three years.

Kaylee Puentez, Sr., Robert Lee

[[{"fid":"54390","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Robert Lee's Kaylee Puentez pulls up for a three-pointer against Bronte. Puentez was Robert Lee’s hot hand this season.

The senior finished her prep career by averaging 12 points per game along with three steals and two assists.

That was a big reason Robert Lee finished second in 11-1A and why Puentez was selected as the Offensive MVP for the district.

Skylar Harris, So., Sonora

[[{"fid":"54334","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Sonora's Skylar Harris goes up for a layup against TLCA. Jan. 29, 2019 (LIVE! There were many factors that went into Sonora’s 20-win improvement in 2019. One of those factors was Harris, who moved in ahead of the school year.

Harris was a first team All-District 4-3A selection after averaging 12.5 points and 4.4 steals per game to go with 191 deflections.

That led to Sonora claiming their first bi-district win since 2015.

Honorable Mention (4): Allison Vaughn, Jr. Christoval; Landry Reynolds, Sr., Wall; Morgan Walker, Sr., Central; Zoe Bratcher, Jr., Veribest

Post/Forward (6):

Sam Rocha, Sr., Wall

[[{"fid":"55609","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Wall's Sam Rocha (22) goes up for a layup against Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill. Feb. 28, 2019 (LIVE! Photo/Sam Fowler)

Rocha picked up Offensive MVP honors in District 4-3A after proving to be a dominant force inside for the Lady Hawks.

The Angelo State signee averaged 14.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 1.7 assists per game. That was just what Wall needed to make their first trip back to the state tournament since 2016.

Rocha left everything on the court in their overtime loss to Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill. The 6-1 senior finished that game with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Kinlee Bowman, Sr., Ballinger

[[{"fid":"52593","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Ballinger's Kinlee Bowman (20) fights for a rebound against Jim Ned. This year brought a third straight first team All-District nod for Bowman.

The three-year feature for the Lady Bearcats averaged 13.3 points, seven rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.4 assists per game.

Head coach Jerry McSherry praised the senior for her defensive play more so than her offensive play in the paint.

That led to Ballinger dominating their way to second place in the district behind Wall.

Lyndee Walker, Sr., Garden City

[[{"fid":"53567","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Garden City's Lyndee Walker (24) shoots a jump shot against Lamesa Klondike. Walker had a tremendous final year for the Lady Bearkats that culminated with District MVP honors.

The senior finished with an average of 13.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game.

That helped Garden City to a season-high ranking of fourth in Class 1A.

Ruby Magnus, Sr., Mason

[[{"fid":"55198","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Mason's Ruby Magnus (32) cuts through two San Saba defenders in the regional final. Feb. 22, 2019 (LIVE! Photo/Sam Fowler)

Magnus will have her name etched in Mason lore for a long while.

The senior has averaged a double-double in her career since getting moved up to varsity after the 11th game in her freshman year.

Since then, she’s scored over 2,000 points and 1,500 rebounds. She added to those totals with an average of 15.7 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and 1.4 blocks for the Cowgirls.

Arguably the biggest highlight of Magnus’ senior campaign came in their state semifinal loss to Grapeland. The 5-11 post finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Grapeland had no answer for Magnus’ dominance.

Magnus was hands down Mason’s MVP this season.

Emily Bunger, So., Eden

[[{"fid":"55608","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Eden's Emily Bunger (22) goes up for a layup against Bronte. Dec. 27, 2018 (LIVE! Bunger was undoubtedly the MVP for the Lady Bulldogs and that was reflected with her MVP nod for District 12-1A.

Teams were hounded by nightmares after Bunger averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds and four steals per game. That helped Eden make a run to the regional quarterfinals where they fell to no. 9-ranked Rankin.

Bunger will continue to give teams nightmares in her final two years with Eden.

Codee Meador, Jr., Eldorado

[[{"fid":"53138","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Eldorado's Codee Meador puts up a jumpshot against Miles. Jan. 15, 2018 (LIVE! Meador was the lone first team all-district selection for Eldorado and with good reason.

The junior post averaged 14.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.7 steals and three assists per game. She led the team in points and rebounds and was second on the team in steals. That helped Eldorado to their first playoff appearance since 2017.

Meador will be key to Eldorado’s team after the Lady Eagles graduate four seniors from their 2018-19 squad.

Honorable Mention (3): Kayce Jackson, Sr., Christoval; Regan Smithwick, Fr., Miles; Mary Kyle Johnson, Sr., Sonora; Jayden Fiebiger, Sr., Wall;

6th Man:

Layla Young, Fr., F, Central

Coming off the bench, Young provided a nice spark for the Lady Cats.

The freshman forward averaged six points, four rebounds and one steal per game to help Central challenge for the District 3-6A crown.

That helped Young earn second team All-District honors.

Coach of the Year

Jim Eubank, Veribest

[[{"fid":"55607","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Veribest's Jim Eubank coaches his team up ahead of their regional quarterfinal meeting with Blackwell. Feb. 18, 2019 (LIVE! Photo/Sam Fowler)

Eubank is a 40-year veteran in the coaching field and is no stranger to turning teams around.

He did just that at Veribest, a program in the midst of a long playoff drought.

In Eubank’s first year at Veribest, he ended that drought and led the Lady Falcons to their first district championship in 17 years.

But the Lady Falcons weren’t done making history. After winning their first area championship, Veribest took down Blackwell for a third time this season to make their first-ever appearance in the regional tournament.
