AREA BASEBALL: Weishuhn, Heuertz Homer in Wall's Explosive District Opener

 

WALL, TX -- The Wall Hawks continued their dominant start to the 2019 season with a 16-0 run-rule win over TLCA on Tuesday thanks to home runs from Caleb Heuertz and Gage Weishuhn.

Wall spared no time getting on the board in the first inning, sending 16 batters to the plate and scoring 12 runs. After loading the bases, Heuertz nailed a grand slam home run over left field to put Wall up 4-0. Weishuhn hit a three-run home run in his second at-bat of the inning to close out the scoring.

Ryan Gully picked up the scoring in the next inning with an RBI single. Tanner Seider then drove in a run one batter later with a bases loaded walk. Heuertz then picked up his fifth and sixth RBIs with a two-run double in the next at-bat to put Wall up 16-0.

Heuertz finished the day a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with six RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Gully also went 3-for-3 on the day with three RBIs and three runs scored.

TLCA managed just three hits against Wall's pitching staff. Ian Moore, Harrison Ragan and Cameron Lawson each had one hit to their names.

Four pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts for the Hawks. Jake Jansa was credited with the win after going two innings and allowing just one hit against four strikeouts.

Lawson was given the loss after allowing 15 runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Wall (11-0, 1-0) will travel to Snyder for tournament play this weekend. TLCA (1-6, 0-1) won't play a district game again until next Tuesday against Brady.

Explosive 7th Inning Seals Win for Central

Cole Nelson, Hayden Stevens and Dawson Daniel combined for six RBIs to give Central a 9-5 win over former district rival Midland High.

Central scored two runs across the first four innings to go up 2-0 before finding their rhythm. Central then scored five runs in the final frame.

Daniel kicked off the explosive inning with a two-run double. Stevens followed that up with a two-run triple before an RBI ground out from Nelson capped off the inning.

Gunner Couch went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a double to his name. Nelson was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Jose Lozoya picked up the win for Central, going 51/3 inning and allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts.

Central (9-4-1) will travel to the Lewisville tournament this weekend before opening play in District 3-6A.

Eldorado Picks Up Second Win Behind Garcia's 7 RBIs

Cesar Garcia picked up seven RBIs to lift the Eldorado Eagles to a 17-5 win over Junction in six innings on Tuesday.

After falling behind 3-1 in the first inning, Eldorado exploded for six runs in the top of the third inning to take a 7-3 lead. Eldorado continued to pad their lead, scoring two runs in the fourth and four runs in each the fifth and six innings to seal the early win.

Garcia went 3-for-4 at the plate with two two doubles five runs scored and seven RBIs. David Barajas was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBIs.

Quinten Schulze was the only player for Junction with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 at the plate.

Korbin Covarrubiaz picked up the win in two innings of work. The freshman allowed three runs on one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

Will Chapman was charged with the loss after failing to register an out and allowing three runs on no hits.

Eldorado (2-7) is next scheduled for a doubleheader with Van Horn on March 23. Junction (1-5) opens district play on the road at Medina this Friday.

Sonora's Early Lead Holds Up Against Ballinger

A three-run second inning proved to be enough for the Sonora Broncos to beat Ballinger 12-7 in their District 4-3A opener on Tuesday.

The Broncos scored four runs across the first two innings before the Bearcats responded in the bottom of the second. Cole Zentner scored on a fielder's choice in the inning to get Ballinger on the board.

Eddie Infante picked Sonora's scoring up in the next inning with an RBI single. Logan McDonald would come around to score the very next batter on an error to put Sonora up 6-1.

Sonora added another four runs in the sixth inning before Ballinger had their first multi-run inning of the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Daniel Gonzales picked up the win on the mound and helped his own cause. Gonzales was 1-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate and pitched 6 2/3 innings with seven runs allowed against four strikeouts.

Dylan Taylor, Brock Aschenbeck and Wesley Dutton each had multi-hit games for the Broncos.

Bradyn Bowman was the only Bearcat with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate for Ballinger. Fernando Falcon and Kennedy Byler each had two RBIs for Ballinger

DJ Cavazos was pitcher of record for Ballinger, allowing seven runs on five hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work.

Sonora (6-1, 1-0) will be in the San Angelo JV tournament this weekend before resuming district play next Tuesday at Wall. Ballinger (4-6, 0-1) will be in the Jim Ned tournament this weekend before hosting Reagan County on March 15. 

Reagan County Opens District With Walk-Off Against Brady

A two-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the seventh sent Reagan County fans home happy with a 3-2 win over District 4-3A newcomer Brady.

The two teams held a scoreless deadlock through the first five innings. Brady broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Gonzalo Morales. Morales would advance to third on a wild pitch before coming home on an error to put Brady up 2-0.

Reagan County began their comeback with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Nathan DeLeon came home to score on a passed ball and halved Brady's lead. Jose DelRio came on as a pinch runner and scored on an error to tie the game. Pablo Hernandez finished the game with his walk-off single that drove in Isaac Perez.

Hernandez finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate with Reagan County's lone RBI.

Brady's Morales was 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored to his name.

Walker Bauer was charged with the loss for Brady after surrendering two runs on no hits. There was no winning decision given to Reagan County's pitching staff.

Reagan County (8-3, 1-0) hosts Grape Creek next Tuesday. Brady (6-4-1, 0-1) will face Dublin this Thursday before playing in the Brock tournament this weekend.

Miles Opens District With Run-Rule Win Over Goldthwaite

A four-RBI day for Jared Flores highlighted an explosive 13-1 win in five innings over Goldthwaite for the Miles Bulldogs.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Miles exploded for eight runs in the second inning. Sterling Barker opened the scoring with an RBI triple. Davian Martinez also picked up a pair of RBIs in the inning.

Miles capped off their scoring with a four-run third inning. Flores picked up a pair of RBIs on a double in the inning.

Flores was 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs and a pair of doubles to his name. Martinez was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Mason Bryan was given the win after pitching a one-hit, three-inning gem for Miles. The senior also struck out five batters in the win.

Miles (5-5, 1-0) will play in the Franklin tournament this weekend before traveling to De Leon next Tuesday.
