No. 25 Irion County Advances to Regional Final with Upset Win
ABILENE, TX -- The no. 25-ranked Irion County Hornets kept their magical season alive with a 69-58 upset win over no. 7 Paducah in the Class 1A Region II semifinals on Friday.
It was a battle for the ball as both Irion County Hornets and the Paducah Dragons score after one another and fight for the lead.
Both teams came onto the court hyped, going up and down and kept the score close in the first quarter.
Paducah went go into a full court man defense and caused the Hornets to turnover the ball many times.
However, Paducah got into foul trouble which helped the Hornets keep their small lead on the Dragons.
But that small lead was shortened when Jonathan Henderson hit a three pointer for the Dragons and trailed the Hornets by one point ending the first quarter 16-15.
At the start of the second it was still a fight for the lead. As soon as the Hornets would score, so would the Dragons.
This pattern continued throughout the beginning of the second quarter, until Darvis Flemons busted a three for the Dragons and tied the score.
The tables have turned and Irion County began to trail Paducah by one point.
Paducah stayed in a man defense throughout the second quarter but it wasn’t enough as Nathan Chacon hit a three for the Hornets and tied the score 29-29.
Irion County was able to outscore the Dragons ending the second quarter 33-29.
Both teams started the second half in a strong man defense. Things got rough and tough but Iron County continued to keep their lead.
Mo Marrow sparked the lead for the Hornets and hit two consecutive threes, extending their small lead by 10 points.
The Dragons continued to put pressure on the Hornets in a full court man, but Iron County saw the open spots to drive down the court and score, ending the third quarter 54-40.
Paducah got into foul trouble in the fourth quarter, and helped the Hornets end the game with a 69-58 Victory.
Mo Marrow tallied up 25 points for the Hornets as leading scorer.
Irion County will face the no. Jayton Jaybirds for the Regional Championship title on Saturday March 2 at 2:00 at Moody Coliseum in Abilene.
