AREA SOFTBALL: Bats Come Alive Late for Lady Cats in District Opener

 

SAN ANGELO, TX --The Central Lady Cats scored 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to complete their comeback and beat the Weatherford Lady Kangaroos 11-7 in their District 3-6A opener on Tuesday.

The Lady Cats trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Ashton McMillan had cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to left field.

Central's bats then came alive in the fifth, as they sent nine batters to the plate to score five runs and take a 6-5 lead into the sixth. Rylee Dehn tied the game with her two-run single that scored Emily and Lil'Emily Sanchez. Dehn would then steal home to give Central the lead two batters later.

Weatherford regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bailee Fulps would give Central the lead again with a three-run triple that put the Lady Cats up 9-7. Kylie Maynard came on to pinch run for Fulps and scored the very next at-bat to extend Central's lead to 10-7. Dehn capped off the scoring on an RBI ground-out by Diamond Velazquez.

Fulps was the offensive dynamo for the Lady Cats, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Dehn finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. McMillan and Taylor Martin each had multi-hit games, combining for four of Central's 11 hits.

Fulps also earned the win in the pitcher's circle by going six innings and surrendering six runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. McMillan came on for one inning of relief where she allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk to her name.

Central (4-3-1, 1-0) is scheduled to play in the Bayfront Bash in Corpus Christi this weekend before welcoming Euless Trinity to San Angelo on March 5.

Grape Creek Wins Late Against Sonora in High-Scoring District Opener

After having a large lead early, the Grape Creek Lady Eagles held off a furious rally from the Sonora Lady Broncos to claim a 12-10 win in their District 4-3A opener on Tuesday in Sonora.

Grape Creek sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the second inning to plate seven runs and jump out to a commanding 7-0 lead. Morgan Fowler highlighted the explosive inning with a three-run triple in her second at-bat of the inning.

The Lady Eagles extended their lead to 9-0 on a pair of runs in the top of the third before Sonora began to chip away at the deficit.

Sonora plated three runs in the home half of the third inning. Lesli Ramirez started the rally by scoring on Grape Creek's third error of the inning. Danyse Cantu continued the third inning rally with a two-run single later in the inning.

Caroline Fowler drove in the next run in the top of the fifth inning after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Grape Creek a 10-3 lead.

Sonora then cut the margin to 10-9 with a six-run fifth inning. Aislin Nixon kicked off the scoring barage with an RBI single to center field and advanced to second on the throw home. Nixon then came around on an RBI double from Dekota Morrow. Morrow came around on a sacrifice fly after stealing third base. Danica Jimenez picked up her only RBI on a single that scored Brae Harris. Ramirez cleared the two runners on base in the next at-bat with a bunt and an error to bring the Lady Broncos within one run.

Harris would tie the game in the next inning with an RBI double to center field. Grape Creek then posted two runs in the seventh inning to claim the win.

Morgan Fowler went 1-for-5 at the plate with a team-high three RBIs in the win. Caroline Fowler and Taigan Rivers each had a pair of RBIs to go with a pair of hits.

Morgan claimed the win, going the distance with 10 runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts to her name. Only four of those 10 runs were earned runs.

Cantu was the only Lady Bronco with multiple RBIs, going 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Harris, Morrow, Sykes and Sky Hernandez each picked up a pair of hits in the loss.

Cantu was charged with the loss despite her complete game effort. She was charged with every offensive statistic Grape Creek recorded.

Grape Creek (1-0 in 4-3A) will travel to the Llano tournament this weekend before hosting Winters on Tuesday in a non-district clash. Sonora (3-5, 0-1) will also travel to the Llano tournament, then host Ballinger on Tuesday.

Hoelscher has Field Day in Ballinger's Rout of Brady

The Ballinger Lady Bearcats run-ruled the Brady Lady Bulldogs 12-1 in five innings to open up their district slate thanks to a four-hit, four-RBI day from Tristen Hoelscher.

Hoelscher finished the day 4-for-4 with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored to start the Lady Cats on the right foot in District 4-3A. Hoelscher drove in runs in the first, second and fourth to help the Lady Bearcats get a stranglehold of the game and a 9-0 lead through four innings.

Five other Lady Bearcats had multi-hit games. Of those other five, Emily West had the best day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Brady didn't score their lone run until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Daniella Luna picked up the win, pitching five innings and surrendering on run on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Ballinger (1-2, 1-0) will travel to Sonora on Tuesday after competing in the Eula Tournament this weekend. Brady (0-1 in 4-3A) will be in the Llano tournament this weekend.

Miles Bounces Back Behind Brooks, Smithwick's Stellar Day

Skyler Brooks picked up her fourth home run of the season and freshman Regan Smithwick racked up three hits and an RBI to help the Miles Lady Bulldogs down McCamey 13-4 in six innings on Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs led 3-1 after the third inning before McCamey tied the game in the top of the fourth.

Miles responded with a six-run fourth inning. The Lady Bulldogs sent 12 batters to the plate in that inning. Marissa Kalina highlighted the inning with her two-run double to put Miles up 8-3. Hailey Smith capped off the scoring with a bases-loaded walk to drive in Emily Sklenarik.

Brooks finished the day 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs from a two-run home run and two runs scored. Smithwick was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.

Lizzy Syler picked up the win for Miles, going four innings and allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Brooks came on for 1-1/3 inning of relief where she allowed one run on three hits and a walk.

Miles (6-5) will compete in the Eula Tournament this weekend.

Reagan County Explodes Past TLCA in Second Inning for District Opening Win

The Reagan County Lady Owls scored nine runs in the second inning to take control of what would eventually be a 20-3 run rule win over TLCA in five innings on Tuesday.

Leading the charge for the Lady Owls was Kaylee Vargas, who went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Vargas drove in two of her three RBIs in that explosive second inning, where Reagan County sent 14 batters to the plate.

Lainey Griggs and McKenna Manley each had multi-hit games for the Lady Eagles. Griggs was 2-for-3 with TLCA's lone RBI. Manley was 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Yuli Balderas was credited with the win after going all five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.

Manley was given the loss after surrendering 15 runs in two innings of work.

Reagan County (5-1, 1-0) will compete in the Big Spring Tournament this weekend. TLCA (2-10, 0-1) will also be at the Big Spring Tournament this weekend.
