AREA GIRLS HOOPS: Local Teams Put on Good Showings at Tournaments

 

CANYON, TX-- It took the sixth-ranked team in Class 6A to hand the Wall Lady Hawks their first loss of the season.

The Allen Lady Eagles beat Wall 66-43 in the championship game of the Canyon Tournament.

Wall had won their previous two games against host Canyon (44-33) and Princeton (55-22).

Recent Angelo State signees Sawyer Lloyd and Sam Rocha were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Hawks are now 6-1 on the season heading into their nondistrict rivalry game with Tuscola Jim Ned this Tuesday.

Sonora Claims Hardware in Ozona Tournament

The Sonora Lady Broncos bounced back from their loss to Veribest by going undefeated over the weekend and winning the Ozona Tournament.

The Lady Broncos opened up the tournament with a 37-23 win over Alpine. They followed that the very next day with a 63-18 win over Comstock and a 50-28 win over host Ozona.

On Saturday, Sonora won the championship with a dominant 48-11.

Senior Mary Kyle Johnson was named Tournament MVP after scoring 41 points in their four games. Brae Harris and Jackilyn Sykes were named to the All-Tournament team as well. Sykes scored 32 of her 47 points in the Lady Broncos first two games of the tournament.

Sonora (8-1) hosts Comstock this Tuesday.

Lady Cats Finish Katy Phillips 66 Tournament on High Note

The Central Lady Cats dropped their first two games of the Katy Phillips 66 Tournament over the weekend.

Those losses came to Cypress Creek (47-30) and Klein Collins (39-34).

However, Central left the Greater Houston Area on a positive after winning 40-26 over Alief Hastings.

Central is now 9-4 on the season with a road trip to Abilene Cooper coming up on Tuesday.

Miles Rebounds After Opening Loss at RIBS Tournament

The Miles Lady Bulldogs lost their opening round game of their annual RIBS Tournament before breaking their five-game skid to open the season.

After their loss to Grape Creek, Miles went on to beat the Early junior varsity and Early varsity teams to claim the consolation prize in the tournament.

Miles is now 2-5 on the year. They host Early again this Tuesday.
