MCCUTCHEN TOURNEY: Del Valle too Much for Chiefs in Game 2

SAN ANGELO, TX-- The Lake View Chiefs couldn't overcome turnovers and fouls in 56-45 loss to the El Paso Del Valle Conquistadors in the McCutchen Tournament.

Both teams traded off 6-2 runs in the first quarter before the Chiefs went on a 4-0 run to close out the period and take a 12-10 lead.

Del Valle responded by going a 12-7 run of their own to take a narrow 20-19 lead midway through the second. Then the Conquistadors committed a foul and Nathan Nunez compounded the situation by getting a technical foul in addition to the two free throws. Lake View made three of the four shots from the charity stripe to take a 22-20 lead.

Del Valle rallied for a 4-0 run to close out the half and go into the break up 24-20.

The Conquistadors stepped on the accelerator from there, growing their lead to 13 in the third quarter. Before the end of the period, Ahmad Daniels found the bottom of the net from deep to make it 42-32 heading into the fourth quarter.

Two trips to the free throw line from Dylan Hart and a putback jumper on a missed free throw cut Del Valle's lead to seven points with 1 minute, 11 seconds left in the game.

Del Valle's lead would extend their lead back to 11 at 56-45 under 30 seconds left to play to seal the win.

Lake View falls to 3-3 on the season after falling to Lubbock Monterey earlier. The Chiefs will play San Antonio Reagan at 1 p.m. Friday.

Central Makes Late Comeback in Tournament Opener

The Central Bobcats basketball had an 11-point lead erased before regaining the lead in the fourth quarter to beat the El Paso Ysleta Indians 47-44 in the opening game of the Doug McCutchen Memorial Tournament on Thursday.

The Bobcats had a lead as big as 11 points in the second quarter and held a 26-22 lead at the half. That lead eventually was trimmed to just one in the third quarter.

Ysleta would take the lead in the fourth quarter and Central wouldn't get it back until the Bobcats hit a three pointer with under a minute left for a 45-44 lead.

Central got some breathing room on a layup from Hunter Gibbs on an inbound pass with 30 seconds left in the game.

Ysleta had a chance to tie the game, but Christian Luera missed a three pointer. The Indians were fouled on a put back attempt, but missed both free throws.

Deveraux Minix had the hot hand for the Bobcats, scoring 11 points in the win. Nine of his points came from three pointers.

Central (2-1) will face Cedar Park at 11:30 a.m. on Friday to close out pool play.
