AREA GIRLS HOOPS: Jones Catches Fire to Lead Christoval Convincingly Past Irion County
MERTZON, TX-- The Christoval Lady Cougars defeated the Irion County Lady Hornets convincingly in a 35-22 defeat.
In a slow first quarter of play, Irion County had just two points going into the second quarter. A big three pointer by Lady Hornet’s junior guard Jadyn Miller had the Christoval lead down just six points with 4 minutes, 12 seconds to play in the half.
After a few big free throws from Christoval sophomore center Sterling Baker, the Lady Cougars would take the 13-8 lead into the locker room.
As the second half began, Christoval’s Kayce Jackson scored a quick three points while adding another assist. Sparking a 3rd quarter run for the Lady Cougars and pushing the lead to 8 with 6:04 to play. With the clock winding down the 3rd quarter Jadyn Miller hit another big three for the Lady Hornets. Ending the quarter with the Christoval lead only 20-17
Going into the fourth quarter up only up three points, Christoval’s sophomore guard Graci Jones caught fire. Jones’ three big buckets to start the 4th quarter put the Lady Cougars up 30-20 with 2:53 to play in the game.
Ending the game with huge defensive stops and a colossal 12-point second half from Jones, the Lady Cougars came out with the victory.
Graci Jones ended with the game-high 15 points for Christoval while Irion County’s Mercedes Davis ended with 11 points.
Eden Outlast Miles in Dogfight
MILES, TX-- The Eden Lady Bulldogs and the Miles Lady Bulldogs faced off in a dogfight that led to Eden beating Miles 50-46..
The game started out close as the teams traded runs with Miles starting the game on an 8-2 run.
Eden came back fast and ended the quarter on a 7-1 run to take a 9-8 lead after the first quarter.
As Miles kept the same pace as the first quarter with putting up 10 points, Eden out scored them by one point. This brought the lead to 22-20.
The third quarter was a lot more offensive game with both teams increasing their free throw attempts by a margin. It was a neck-and-neck battle throughout the quarter, but at the end of the third the score had Eden up 38-34.
The game was within one point up until the end and the Eden Lady Bulldogs ended up pulling this one out 50-46.
Fiebiger, Rocha Double Down on Double Digits to Get Past 6A Midland
Just as they did to Midland Lee, the Lady Hawks downed Class 6A Midland 51-39 on Tuesday night.
Leading the way to victory once again were seniors Jayden Fiebiger and Sam Rocha. Rocha posted a team-high 16 points while Fiebiger tallied 12 points.Rocha had two three-pointers and three baskets from inside the arc. All of Fiebiger's points came from inside the three-point line.
Right behind Fiebiger was Sawyer Lloyd with 11. Most of her points came as a brace in the second half.
The Lady Hawks' defense made things easy by holding Midland to just seven points in the first quarter to take a respectable 14-7 margin. That seven point margin would hold at 27-20 as the teams went into the locker room at the half.
Behind a combined eight points from Lloyd and Rocha, Wall extended their lead to 10 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Hawks improve to 5-0 on the young season.
No. 7 Garden City Uses Big 4th Quarter Comeback to Beat No. 8 Rankin.
A 20-point fourth quarter helped the Garden City Lady Bearkats stay undefeated on the road at Ranking Tuesday night.
The Lady Kats trailed 21-18 at the half before their late outburst completed the comeback.
Leading the charge were seniors Ixchel Sotelo and Lyndee Walker with 12 points.
Sotelo had eight points and Walker had seven in the second half to spur the comeback.
Jordan Driver also had seven points in the fourth quarter alone for the Lady Kats.
Garden City improves to 10-0 on the season.
20-point Second Quarter Guides Veribest Past Sonora
The Veribest Lady Falcons handed the Sonora Lady Broncos their first loss of the year in a 48-46 thriller on Tueday.
That 20-point second quarter came after Sonora took a 12-8 lead after the first quarter and Veribest held a narrow 28-26 lead at the half.
The two teams then combined for 15 points in the third quarter and Veribest's lead was 36-33 heading into the final quarter.
Sonora's 13 points in the fourth were not enough.
Leading Sonora's offense was senior Mary Kyle Johnson with 15 points. Junior Brae Harris was second on the team with 11 points.
Sonora (4-1) will play in the Ozona tournament this weekend. Veribest (3-1) will play in the Highland Tournament this weekend.
