AREA FOOTBALL: Sonora Rights Ship With Playoff-Clinching Win Over Johnson City

 

JOHNSON CITY, TX-- After starting District 13-3A Division II 0-2, the Sonora Broncos are in the playoffs for a 10th straight year after beating the Johnson City Eagles Friday night.

The 24-7 victory was Sonora’s second win in a row and came against former Sonora head coach David Sine.

The Broncos had 288 yards of total offense, all of which came on the ground. Senior Wesley Dutton led Sonora with 158 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Junior Wilson Johnson had 55 yards rushing and a touchdown on 15 carries. Brandon Martinez had 53 yards rushing and a touchdown on eight carries.

Meanwhile, the Broncos defense held Johnson City to 160 yards of total offense.

All of the scoring in this game came in the first half.

Sonora jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter with Johnson rushing for a 5-yard touchdown and Martinez rushing for a 2-yard touchdown.

Dutton extended Sonora’s lead to 18-0 with a 79-yard run with 9 minutes, 43 seconds left in the half.

Later in the quarter, Johnson City would capitalize on a fumble from Dutton, running it 57 yards the other way for their only score.

Dutton would make amends for the fumble by scoring on a 2-yard run with 1:08 left in the first half.

Sonora (4-5, 2-2) will close out the regular season at home against Brady next week.

TLCA Torched by Bangs Dragons

The TLCA Eagles fell 52-24 to the Bangs Dragons on senior night at Lake View Stadium on Friday.

J.R. Wilson and Eddie Carranco combined for over 150 yards rushing for the Eagles.

Bangs led 34-7 going into the half thanks to turnovers by the Eagles. TLCA scored their only touchdown of the half on a 50-yard pass from Kaden Kirkland to Seth Levesque.

TLCA (1-8, 0-6) will close out their season on the road at Ballinger next week.

Bangs (3-6, 3-3) will host Cisco in the final week of the season.
