Foles' Win in the Super Bowl Proves Texas is Best

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—Tom Brady will always be known as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

But nobody will forget the name that bested the future Hall-of-Famer last night. That name is none other than Austin Westlake and University of Arizona alum Nick Foles.

Last night in Super Bowl LII, Foles completed the job that was started by Philadelphia Eagles’ franchise quarterback Carson Wentz, who went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 14.

The Super Bowl MVP award went to Foles after he threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns to beat Brady and the New England Patriots 41-33.

The win puts Foles in elite company for Texas and Austin Westlake quarterbacks. The only other quarterback from Texas to win a Super Bowl and the MVP honors for the game is another Chaparral and future Hall-of-Famer Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints.

But last night’s win was not just another Super Bowl victory. It proved the dominance that Texas quarterbacks have when put on the big stage in football.

Sure, only two Texan quarterbacks have ever won the Super Bowl. However, they both won it in their first appearance in the game.

What’s more surprising is that Foles led the Eagles despite being the backup quarterback, a la Tom Brady when Drew Bledsoe got injured. As a backup, it’s easy to get rattled because you may not get the same amount of practice reps or you may not be in sync with your 10 other teammates on the field.

Foles was never fazed. That is because of Foles’ time in the Texas high school ranks for Westlake.

In 2006 Foles lost two critical games in high school. The first was a 35-28 loss to Seguin that cost Westlake a district title. Then Foles got a chance to redeem himself eight weeks later in the 5A Division 1 State Championship game. However Southlake Carrol got the better of Westlake 43-29 in that game.

The man who will be forever enshrined in Canton, Ohio, was beaten by a kid from Texas who had a dream.
