MONAHANS, TX-- Yesterday Monahans Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Mickey Owens, a Big Lake native, announced he was retiring from coaching after a 34 year career.
Owens' 34 year career included 20 as a head coach starting in 1998 when he took over the helm of Rankin High School.
After three years at Rankin, Owens moved to the Concho Valley in 2001 to coach the Ballinger Bearcats. Owens would compile a 28-8 record during his four year stint at Ballinger.
After leaving Ballinger in 2004, Owens implemented his tough-to-defend Wing T offense along the I-20 corridor at Monahans in 2005.
Owens' record over his 13 years at the helm for the Loboes was an impressive 121-41. This past season, Monahans finished 9-3 and made it to the Area Round of the playoffs.
No replacement has been named for Owens, but pundits around the state say Monahans is going to be a highly regarded opening for the 2018 season.

Monahans lost to Wall 50-13 in the 2017 season opener.
