24 San Angelo Central Bobcats Honored with All-District Awards

SAN ANGELO, TX-- Following another historic 11-1 season, the praise for the San Angelo Central Bobcats continues to roll in.

Over the weekend, 23 players and Head Coach Brent Davis received All-District honors.

Davis received the honor of District 2-6A Coach of the Year after the Bobcats' fifth straight District Championship.

Junior quarterback Maverick McIvor was named the Offensive MVP after throwing for a program second-best 3,371 yards and 42 touchdowns along with 883 yards and eight touchdowns rushing.

After a breakout year from former Lake View Chief Jesse Scott, the senior wide receiver was named District Newcomer of the year. Scott finished the year with 956 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Bobcats also saw eight of their players get first team honors in Gunner Couch, Henry Teeter, Phillip Lupton, Nick Hernandez, Noah Gatton, Otto Haynes, Nick Severson, and Jakobe Green.

Couch was an integral part to an offensive line that opened up running lanes for a rushing attack that tallied 1,736 yards in 2017. Along with Scott, Teeter and Lupton were vital downfield weapons for McIvor in his first year as the starter for Central.

Defensively, Gatton and Hernandez gave opposing teams nightmares by combining for 28 tackles for a loss along with 15 sacks between the two. Green, Haynes and Severson patrolled the defensive secondary well for the Angry Orange in 2017 with Green and Haynes picking off three passes combined during the season. Severson was fifth on the team in tackles with 58.

Jaden Coates, Jarrett Hill, Michael Niera, and Demarcus Cobb each received Second Team nods for the Bobcats.

Following a season-ending injury to Austin Barron, Cobb, a defensive back by trade, pulled double duty as a running back for the Bobcats. In six games as a running back for Central, Cobb racked up 200 yards rushing. On the defensive side, Cobb tallied 17 tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Coates, a senior receiver, was the silent workhorse for Central during the 2017 campaign. In the Bobcats' 31-20 victory over Odessa Permian, Coates scored two special teams touchdowns which were the difference in the game that ultimately decided the District Championship.

Niera was part of a defense that tallied 41 sacks in 2017. The senior defensive lineman finished third on the team with five sacks to his name.

Hill, a senior offensive lineman, was another key piece to the Bobcats' front that protected McIvor.

Rounding out the honors are nine Bobcats who were selected to the Honorable Mention team. Receivers Jackson Timme and Noah Perez, offensive linemen Rowdy Garza and Oscar Nino, defensive linemen Malik Finley and Malik Smith, linebacker Anthony Guerrero, defensive back Gage Smith, and kicker Ezekiel Del Rio were the nine to get the nod to the Honorable Mention team.

The Bobcats' last game of the season came in the Area Round of playoffs where they lost 55-37 to Mansfield.
