High School Football: Menard Comes Out on Top in Nailbiter with Iraan
SAN ANGELO, TX — “Stick to what you do and the things we expect to happen will start to happen,” said Menard Head Coach Jayson Wilhelm. His advice rang true to the end as the Menard Yellowjackets defeated the Iraan Braves 27-21 in a nailbiter for Menard fans. The ‘Jackets also were able to clinch the district title on this win with over 320 offensive yards.
It was a back and forth game from the very start, following a repeating pattern of Iraan scoring and Menard answering right after.
In the first half, Iraan’s points were accounted for by Corley Collins and Kyler Miller for their rushing touchdowns. Passing, Iraan scored again with a 22-yard connection from Brody Myers to Jermaine Bernal.
The ‘Jacket’s quarterback Sebastian Salas was successful twice in the first half on connections to Christian Salazar and Garrett Hill. Salas accounted for about 100 of the offensive yards.
Coach Wilhelm was spot-on again when he said, “We’re going to have to win in the fourth quarter, the game is going to go four quarters.”
The ‘Jacket’s stung the Braves in the last 12 minutes of the game as they held them scoreless across the same stretch.
Menard’s offense fed off their defense and scored two touchdowns to add salt to the wound.
Tony Ortega buzzed by the Braves on his 45-yard rushing touchdown to tie up the game. He was the night’s leading rusher with over 140 yards.

Ortega was described as a “punisher runner” by Coach Wilhelm. He emphasized how it's always a great night for them when they can get Ortega and Christian Salazar the ball on offense.
To seal the deal, Salazar punched in a six-yard touchdown that put the ‘Jackets to the lead, 27-21 was the final.
Menard will travel to Wink to take on the Wildcats to finish out the regular season play.
