Like Sausage and Brisket? How About Two Tons of German Sausage and 300 Briskets!

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Holy Angels Catholic Church in San Angelo is holding its Spring Festival for the 55th year Sunday and is expecting to feed thousands of attendees.

According to the Church website, Holy Angels will be serving a brisket and sausage meal for $10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at 2309 A&M Ave. Meals to go are the same price and are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the drive-through lane.

The meal includes the homemade German sausage, brisket, green beans, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, bread, tea or water, and homemade dessert.

We talked to festival sausage committee member Alan Gully before last year’s festival.  Gully said, “The pork and beef blend sausage is made the traditional way using an old German recipe,” Gully said.  “It’s made by hand in the state-of-the-art cooking facility at Holy Angels.”

“The process includes cutting the pork and beef, grinding it, adding spices and stuffing the sausage into natural casings.”  Gully described. “Then it’s cold smoked using mesquite only and chilled Saturday before the festival.”

Gully says they expect to feed 3,500 to 4,000 meals on Sunday and they have also pre-sold uncooked sausage for people to take home.  That requires a lot of sausage. Two tons to be exact. And they’ll also cook approximately 300 briskets Saturday in preparation for the festival.

In addition to the meal there are games, bingo, arts & crafts, concessions and a cake walk.  A live auction is held from 1 to 6 p.m. in the parish hall following the meal.

There is also a raffle each year.  Tickets are $2 each. Prizes include a $2,000 gift card, $1,000 gift card, three $500 gift cards and restaurant gift certificates.  More information is available at the parish office, 325-949-3308, or see more information online at the Holy Angels website.
