Scary Public Safety Video Made in San Angelo Wins Lone Star EMMY Award

SAN ANGELO, TX -- “Shattered Dreams,” a dramatic video telling of the fatal consequences of teenage drinking and driving, has won a Lone Star EMMY Award.

SATV City Videographer Brian Groves and Angelo State University Multimedia Specialist Brandon Whitford produced the 12-minute video. The pair collected iconic EMMY trophies at an awards banquet Saturday night in San Antonio.

“Shattered Dreams” was one of six finalists for the Emmy in the category of “Children / Youth / Teen – Program / Special / Feature / Segment.” The Lone Star Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences serves all 19 television markets in Texas. The academy recognizes excellence in the television industry with its distinguished EMMY Award.

“When we were asked to be a part of this project, neither of us thought it would reach as many as people as has … much less ultimately be honored at the Lone Star EMMYs,” Groves said. “This is a tremendous honor not only for our planning team but for the entire city of San Angelo.”

“Shattered Dreams” was a collaborative effort between the City of San Angelo, ASU, the San Angelo Independent School District, local law enforcement and San Angelo’s two hospitals that aimed to promote responsible decision-making among high school students regarding underage drinking and impaired driving. It did so by fully immersing teens in a visual experience that combined a short film and a live element showing how irresponsible choices can end the dreams of young people and of others. The video can be viewed at youtube.com/CityofSanAngeloTx and on SATV, Suddenlink channel 17.

“This entire experience has been so exciting and, frankly, unexpected,” Whitford said. “Our aim from the beginning was to create a short film that would challenge students to think about the long-range impact of their decisions. What an honor – not only to receive such an awesome award but to have worked with a team of amazing people that truly care about young people in our city.”

“Shattered Dreams” also won the Kurt Ugland Programming Impact Award from the Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors on Nov. 2. The award honors the video that “most influenced people’s perceptions by touching their hearts and minds.” The Public Information Office also won the Ugland award last year for a video tribute to SAPD Sgt. Korby Kennedy, who was killed in the line of duty last year.

Also at TATOA’s annual conference, San Angelo earned honors for a video about efforts by the local group Art in Uncommon Places’ to place artwork in public spaces. “San Angelo’s Open Air Art Movement” took third place in the Public Education category for offices with operating budgets of more than $200,000.

TATOA is a professional organization of those responsible for telecommunication policies, services and video programming in local governments. This is the fifth straight year the Public Information Office has won awards in TATOA’s statewide video competition. In June, the office won two statewide video awards from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers.
