Lions Club Cooks Up Super Bowl Briskets

The smell of cooking brisket wafted through the air near Holy Angels Catholic Church Saturday morning, a smell that delighted the olfactory senses even blocks away.

The East Angelo Lions Club manned six huge grills early in the morning, cooking briskets for their Super Bowl Brisket Sale Fundraiser.

“We do the Superbowl, Memorial Day and Labor Day,” said Chester Hurlburt of the Lions Club. “We cooked 346 briskets today.”

The cost of the briskets was $7.75 per pound and each weighed between 4.5 and 8 pounds. A steady stream of people came in throughout the morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. to get the ‘best brisket in town.’

“No one does it better,” Candice Lewis explained. “They have over 50 years of experience cooking and seasoning their briskets.”

Lewis mentioned that she delights in listening to the older members, who’ve been with the club for a long time, talk about how they used to make fires to do the brisket sales.

In addition to cooking the briskets for fundraisers, the club also takes a few to charity organizations like House of Faith, Grace and Grub and even the soup kitchen.

The funds gathered from the sale will go towards the programs that the Lions Club sponsors, including the aforementioned and several others.
