City Employees Honored for Service

Many City employees took a break from work Thursday, Jan. 30 to receive accolades from the City of San Angelo for their years of service.

A prominent figure from each department presented the awards to their own men and women, such as Chief of Police Tim Vasquez for the Police Recognition and Ricky Dickson for much of the service and maintenance departments.

Employees are recognized based on five-year increments, and the City also purchases a gift for each employee, beginning with pen and pencil sets for the five year mark.

There were two recognized for 35 years of service, two for 30 years, and the number gradually increased until there were 60 recognized for five years of service.

Lisa Marley, Director of Human Resources for the City of San Angelo, explained that the employees get to pick what they want from a brochure.

“It goes all the way to 40 years of service gifts,” said Marley. “The gifts get nicer the longer they work for us.”

According to Marley, the decision to use the brochure was due to the fact that not everyone could use or would appreciate a standard gift.

“This is a method that everyone seems to like more,” she explained, and mentioned some other tactics employees use. “A lot of people get jewelry for their spouse, these guys use their gift to get something nice for their wife.”

More importantly, according to Marley, was the support that a few employees received from their family.

“I’m really excited to see parents show up for a 25 years of service,” she expressed. “It makes it all worth it from my end.”

This sentiment was echoed by the Mayor, City Manager and every public official in attendance, who all described the hardworking employees as the reason San Angelo succeeds.
