SAISD Students to Make Up Bad Weather Day

The San Angelo Independent School District announced that students will be making up class time for the bad weather day on December 6th.

Shelly Hullihen, Assistant Superintendent of Education Support Services, said, “Every year we are required to build in two bad weather days into our calendar, hoping that we never have to use them.”

Due to icy roads caused by the winter storm from early this month Hullihen said,  “Unfortunately this year we have already had to use one.”

In order to make up this class day students will attend classes on Monday, May 19th. If another bad weather day is used, the class day will be made up on April 18th.

“In case that we use more than two bad weather days we will write a waiver to modify our calendar for the year,” Hullihen said.  “Lets hope that doesn’t happen.”

Board members also approved the calendar for the 2014-2015 school year.

Hullihen said, “Every year we look at increasing the amount of student instructional days.”

The  upcoming year will have 176 student instructional days with the first day of school on August 25th and the last day of class on May 29th, graduation will take place on May 30th.

April 3rd, Good Friday, and May 18 will be used as bad weather days.

“If by chance, like this year, we have to use one of those bad weather days we will first use the May date,” Hullihen said.

Spring Break is scheduled to align with Angelo State University’s calendar.

“We have a lot of students, we have a lot teachers taking classes, we have a lot of families whose children go there and then they also have families that go to our school,” Hullihen said.

Rather than the second week of March as it is usually scheduled, Spring Break will be pushed back one week to begin on March 16.

“In order to align those spring breaks so that they can all have off at the same time [as ASU] is most optimal,” Hullihen said.

She said the calendar for th next school year will be very similar to this year’s calendar.

The district will have the revised schedule for the 2013-2014 school year published this week at www.saisd.org
