Michael Sis San Angelo's New Bishop

The San Angelo Diocese has a new Bishop, Michael Sis, who will be ordained Jan. 27.

The announcement that Sis would replace former Bishop Michael Pfeiffer, who reached retirement age one year and seven months ago, came Thursday morning and a press conference was held at 10:00 a.m. for Bishop Pfeiffer to present Sis.

Sis himself addressed the small crowd, stating what he believed and his hope for the future of the diocese.

“The church belongs to all of us, regardless of our language, our country of origin, or the color of our skin,” said Sis.

“You are now my new flock,” stated Sis. “By the grace of Jesus Christ and with the help of the holy spirit together we have a future full of hope.”

Sis hopes to build bridges with all the people in San Angelo, natives and foreigners, Catholics and Protestants for the good of the city.

He received a standing ovation for his words from the group of supporters.

At the same time, many questions were asked about the future for Bishop Pfeiffer, who plans on retiring in San Antonio.

“I want to give the new Bishop free reign,” said Bishop Pfeiffer. “I think it’s best for me, him and the people that I step aside.”

Bishop Pfeiffer did offer to be available for anything that Sis might need, and plans on continuing to help people.

Many supporters showed up for the conference, including Lucy Thomas, Principal of Angelo Catholic Schools, who presented roses to both men from the children.

“The children love Bishop Pfeiffer,” she said. “He’s a wonderful man and we’re all going to miss him.”
