San Angeloans Sell Their Stuff for a Good Cause

El Paseo de Santa Angelo became a unique market place Saturday morning. Deals were being made on merchandise ranging from tennis shoes and clothes to pots and pans.

“This is the second year we have had the garage sale,” Steve Mahaffey, Internal Auditor for The City of San Angelo, said.

The garage sale hosted by the City is a fundraiser for the United Way. The majority of the proceeds remain in the San Angelo area.

“Each booth is a flat fee. If you get a booth you can keep your proceeds. Items were also donated so the sales from those items will be donated to the United Way along with the concessions,” Mahaffey said.

The United Way of San Angelo is partnered with 18 organizations around the community that will benefit from the garage sale fundraiser.

Mahaffey said, “All the funds do go to local agencies.”

Kathy Keaton, a vendor at the garage sale said, “I can do my part in helping others by cleaning and getting rid of my junk.”

For Justin Craft, the United Way fundraiser isn’t only about helping others. He is raising money to travel to Germany.

“He’s moving to Germany to get married,” Donna Craft said about her son.

After traveling back and forth to visit his Russian girlfriend, Craft decided it was time to get married. The couple has decided to reside in Germany after the wedding.

The proceeds from the Crafts’ sales will go towards Craft’s travel arrangements.

“The best thing is that it is already set up and we don’t have to advertise—it’s very convenient,” Diana Farris said about why she chose to participate in the garage sale.

The United Way raises close to $100,000 throughout the year from their campaign pledge drive and various fundraisers. United Way of the Concho Valley gives back to organizations such as Adult Literacy Council, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Children’s Advocacy Center.
