Angelo State Wool Judging Team Earns First Place at San Antonio Rodeo

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State University Agriculture Department’s student Wool Judging Team took first place and had two individuals place in the top five at the 2019 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Collegiate Wool Judging Contest on Feb. 9 in San Antonio.   

ASU sent two four-person teams to the contest to compete against 13 other teams from Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University. The ASU team made up of Hannah Collins of Cypress, Jordan Schroeder and Trevor Schwartz of San Angelo, and Hannah Thompson of Kerrville scored 2,128 points to finish in first place. The ASU team made up of Clayton Addison of Weatherford, Haley Gifford of La Vernia, Katie Schuller of Clint, and (James) Stran Stultz of Mason scored 2,107 points to finish fifth overall.                

Individually for ASU, Gifford placed second overall with 715 points, just one point behind the winner. Schwartz finished third overall with 713 points, while Thompson finished seventh (710), Stultz finished eighth (709) and alternate Cassie Weishuhn of Eola finished ninth (708).   

In the team categories, ASU finished first and second in Grading, second and sixth in Placing, fourth and sixth in Reasons, and fifth and sixth in Placing & Reasons.   

In the individual categories, Gifford, Schwartz and Thompson swept the top three places in Grading, while Stultz, Schroeder and Weishuhn also finished in the top 10. Stultz, Collins and Schwartz finished in the top 10 in Placing. Thompson took first place in Reasons, and Stultz finished in the top 10 in Placing & Reasons.

The ASU Wool Judging Team is coached by Dr. Will Dickison, associate professor of agriculture, along with student coaches Matthew Salisbury and Tate Schwartz of San Angelo and Dyson Gallien of Saint Hedwig.
