Controversial Callahan County Sheriff's Race May Go To Taylor County Deputy

ABILENE, TX – After having two sheriffs’ candidates embroiled in scandal over lying about their military records, a new candidate wants to add his name to the Callahan County Sheriff’s Republican primary.

According to KTXS, Cliff Griffin, a sergeant with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, will ask the Callahan County Republican Party to nominate him after the primary race.

Last week, the current candidates: Callahan County Chief Deputy Rick Jowers and former Clyde police officer Leroy Foley, have both stated they will withdraw their name from consideration in the general election after the primary if they won. They asked the Callahan County Republican Party to nominate another candidate.

In the aftermath of the stolen valor controversy, Leroy Foley was placed on administrative leave and then resigned from the Clyde Police Department. Chief Deputy Jowers was released from his duties and he ultimately resigned from his post.

The Callahan County Republican Party cannot nominate a replacement until after June 15. A write-in candidate could file to run between July 27 and August 25.
