WATCH: Veteran Tom Green County Deputy is Running for Sheriff

SAN ANGELO, TX – Veteran Tom Green County Sheriff's deputy Keith Muncey announced his candidacy for Sheriff on the steps of the Tom Green County Courthouse on a chilly and brisk Thursday evening.

Muncey has been with the sheriff's office for over two decades and has served as a patrol deputy, investigator, and in the administration.

He was introduced by his campaign treasurer Tim Reid.

Watch Muncey's announcement:

Muncey has three children and was joined by his wife and mother and dozens of supporters for Thursday's announcement.

He is running for sheriff in the March 3, 2020 Republican Primary.  Sheriffs in Texas serve four year terms.  According to the Texas Association of Counties, The sheriff acts as a conservator of the peace and the executive officer of the county and district courts, serve writs and processes of the courts, seizes property after judgment, enforce traffic laws on county roads and supervises the county jail and prisoners.

Muncey is originally from Jamaica and has been in Tom Green County for forty years.

Current Tom Green County Sheriff David Jones announced earlier this year he is not seeking reelection.  Muncey is the second candidate to enter the GOP primary. Former Texas Ranger Nick Hanna, who is now serving the Sheriff's Office as its Chief Deputy, announced his candidacy earlier this month.

There are no candidates in the March Democrat primary in any local or state offices in Tom Green County.
