San Angelo Police: Use Caution on Bridges and Overpasses

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The National Weather Service office in San Angelo and the San Angelo Police Department are urging drivers to use caution while driving especially on Loop 306 this morning.  Temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark and bridges and overpasses may be iced over.  

A Winter Weather Advisory continues in effect until 9 a.m.this morning for the area mainly east of a line from Ballinger to Eden to Menard. Patchy light freezing drizzle and temperatures at or just below freezing will result in hazardous driving conditions.

In the counties north of San Angelo a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday for all of the Big Country area along and north of Interstate 20. A mix of patchy freezing rain, sleet and snow will occur early this morning. After mid-morning, the precipitation is expected to be snow, possibly mixed with some sleet. Sleet and snow accumulations from a half inch up to 2 inches is possible. Hazardous driving conditions are expected, especially on bridges and overpasses.

At 600 a.m. radar continued to show an area of light freezing rain from Merkel to Brownwood. Radar also shows an area of light snow from Sterling City to Roby and was moving east and northeast into the Big Country. Snowfall accumulations north of Interstate 20 should range from a half to 2 inches.

The SAPD issued a nixle at 7:30 a.m. warning drivers to use caution on area roadways Thursday morning.  

The forecast calls for temperatures to rise above freezing by mid morning and reach a high in the mid 40s Thursday afternoon.  Precipitation is also forecast to end this morning.
