Icy and Dangerous Weather Forces Delays Thursday Morning

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Wednesday's freezing rain wreaked havoc on San Angelo area roadways as first responders rushed to aid commuters involved in dozens of crashes and forecasters warn that road conditions could be worse Thursday morning.  

According to the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, patchy light freezing rain will persist across the area southeast of a Baird to Sonora line while patchy freezing drizzle will occur elsewhere across West Central Texas through 8 p.m.

Temperatures will remain at or just below freezing, resulting in slick roadways, especially bridges and overpasses. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution when driving this evening.

Freezing rain and sleet are expected with ice accumulations of around five hundredths to a tenth of an inch possible, with local amounts of fifteen hundredths of an inch possible in the Concho Valley, Heartland, Northwest Hill Country, and the Northern Edwards Plateau. Freezing rain or drizzle continuing through tonight, with a little sleet and/or snow possible mainly Thursday morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday morning.  A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.

Many government offices as well as public services will delay opening Thursday morning.

• City of San Angelo offices open at 10 a.m. Thursday. 
• Concho Valley Council of Governments open at 10 a.m.
