Widespread Rain Forecast Today With Freezing Rain Possible in the Northern Counties

 

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Freezing rain could occur tonight across the Big Country and northwest Concho Valley, which could result in very light ice accumulations. This could cause hazardous travel conditions.

A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 6 pm and lasts through noon Saturday for Nolan, Fisher, Jones, Haskell and Throckmorton counties.

According to the National Weather Service, Widespread moderate to locally heavy rain expected today into tonight across West Central Texas.

Minor street flooding and flooding of low water crossings will be possible. Isolated thunderstorms will also be possible, with the main threat being lightning.

Freezing rain and sleet will be possible early Saturday morning in the Big Country and northwest Concho Valley, then a change to mainly snow is expected by around sunrise along and west of a line from Sweetwater to Throckmorton.

Snow accumulations of a half inch to an inch, and locally up to 2 inches, is possible, which would result in hazardous travel conditions.

This evening into late tonight, temperatures will get to near or below freezing in the Big Country and northwest Concho Valley, resulting in the potential for freezing rain resulting in very light ice accumulations.

Should freezing rain occur, bridges, overpasses, elevated surfaces, and exposed objects like power lines will be most susceptible to icing.

Sleet will be possible as well late tonight into Saturday morning as the rain transitions to snow.

Light snow accumulations of around a half inch to an inch, and locally up to 2 inches, are expected along and west of a Sweetwater to Throckmorton line Saturday morning.

Light snow accumulations could also occur in Sterling and Coke counties.

Forecasters call for a 100 percent chance of rain Friday and Friday night with temperatures in the mid 40s Friday and mid 30s Friday night into Saturday morning. 

High temperatures Saturday should be in the lower 40s with a 50 percent chance of precipitation.
