Tropical Cyclone Sergio Heading to West Texas This Weekend

SAN ANGELO, TX -- While the Southeastern U.S. is dealing with Hurricane Michael, the Concho Valley is facing a tropical storm as well over the weekend.

Tropical cyclone Sergio is currently in the Pacific ocean off the coast of Baja California and is headed northeast at 13 miles per hour.  What’s left of Sergio will bring rain and thunderstorms to San Angelo and the Concho Valley on Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service, rain chances return again for this weekend in West Central Texas along with the possibility for more flooding concerns. In fact, Thursday and Friday afternoon may see a few isolated thunderstorms in association with a weak disturbance.

Then, the main show will begin on Saturday and Sunday as the remnants of tropical cyclone Sergio move across the region. This combined with a strong trough moving across the western
U.S. and on into the plains will provide plenty of support for showers and thunderstorms. With soils already saturated, or near saturated, this could lead to additional flooding concerns for the
weekend.

Sergio should continue to accelerate toward the east-northeast or northeast over the next few days, and approach Baja California Sur on early Friday.

The primary threat associated with Sergio and its remnants will likely be life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides within mountainous terrain in the Mexico state of Sonora, the U.S. Southern Plains and the Ozarks through the weekend.

At this time the NWS has a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast.

Finally, it appears as though a strong cold front will pass through the region sometime on Sunday. Temperatures on Monday, as a result, will be much cooler than the previous few days.
