Fox News to Air Transgender Discrimination TV Ad

On Thursday, July 21, Fox News will premiere a national television ad featuring a transgender woman explaining the effect the impact laws like North Carolina’s HB2 have on the transgender community, said a press release Monday.

The ad will air during the Republic National Convention held in Cleveland, Ohio. MSNBC will also air the ad a week later during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

The purpose of the ad is to bring awareness to the heightened level of harassment and violence transgender individuals may face if forced to comply with laws that prohibit them to use certain restrooms. The ad features the story of one transgender woman and her struggle to comply with the law while avoiding the harassment of using a male restroom.

According to a press release sent out by Equality Texas, the organization has also released its own ad. The video shoes the story of a transgender man from Houston and his coworker Steven. Dylan talks about the process of working with individuals who didn’t know he was transgender and what their interaction was like after they found about his transition.  

Steven talks about the way his interactions with Dylan are no different than with the other workers. They get along because Dylan is a competent worker and they share the same values.

“Many people have never met a transgender person before. We decided to produce this ad to show that transgender Texans are our coworkers, our neighbors, our friends and family members,” said Chuck Smith of Equality Texas.

The ad was funded by Fairness USA, a partnership led by the Freedom for All Americans Education Fund, the Movement Advancement Project, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and the Equality Ohio Education Fund, with support from the Equality Federation Institute, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
