Sign Wars: Political Yard Signs Disappearing Across San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX -- With the political season heating up and the Nov. 6 election a month away, candidates and their campaigns are experiencing yard signs disappearing across San Angelo.

Yard signs seem to disappear during every political election cycle and it’s easy to blame the competition; Republicans blame Democrats and Democrats blame Republicans.

Sometimes, it’s just the kids down the street.

Tom Green County Democratic Party Chairman David Currie says Democrats have seen Beto O’Rourke signs disappearing in the College Hills area particularly.

He asks that whoever is taking the signs to stop.

Tom Green County Republican Party Chairman Jeff Betty agrees.  “We should all be more mature than this. Stealing political yard signs is juvenile.”  And they are expensive.

Currie says he also had an inexperienced crew install roadside signs on Loop 306 and they were placed in front of signs for Republicans.

Betty called Currie and requested the signs be moved and Currie complied.

Whatever your political persuasion, candidates and campaigns ask that we all remember that campaigning is hard work and damaging or stealing campaign signs make it even harder.

Support your candidate, but have the common courtesy to let others support theirs as well.

This petty, juvenile stupidity happens time and time again in small town local government elections. It's just not a big enough story to garner any media interest outside of the area involved. City and county incumbents and candidates spend a small fortune on all this garbage campaign material while friends and family of the opponent sneak off with them in the night. Nothing new here...... Oh, and those that don't get stolen usually end up as roadside litter after the election.

The political sign in my yard was stolen. It really doesn’t matter what “side” you are supporting, it is a Constitutional right of the freedom to do so, a freedom of non-violent speech. How does my yard sign harm others?....it doesn’t. If you don’t like my voice then go get your own sign in protest or better yet, actually get out and vote on Election Day! But DO NOT come on to my private property and steal or vandalize something in my yard, that is when it crosses the line. It is not only juvenile, but a criminal offense. The distruction of my property doesn’t make me change my political views, it only strengthens them, those actions are exactly the reason I support change and the ideas of a particular candidate.
