Annual Walk MS Fundraiser Returns To San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX – The annual Walk MS event will help raise money and awareness for multiple sclerosis on April 22nd. Members of the community will have the opportunity to help support and meet individuals who are suffering with this disease.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is unpredictable and is common in adults as young as 20. The disease causes damage to the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information between the body and the brain.

This disease affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide and is often characterized by causing symptoms like numbness and tingling to more sever cases causing blindness and paralysis. One of the major problems with MS is that a person’s progress cannot be predicted, however, with the help of the fundraiser and extensive research, scientists are able to work hard every day to find a cure.

The walk has been a national movement since 1988 and with the help of hundreds of thousands of volunteers they have been able to raise millions of dollars. Last year, there were over 550 walks totaling 330,000 participants who helped raise nearly $50 million dollars. This year, the event is expected to raise enough money to surpass the $1 billion target of the cumulative fundraising. All the money raised helps the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Last year in San Angelo, 302 participants raised $33,409.99 for the cause.

“Walk MS is a joyous gathering with a wonderful ‘we’re in this together’ feeling,” Cyndi Zagieboylo, President and CEO of the National MS Society, said “Together, we are accelerating progress in making life-changing breakthroughs so that each person with MS can live her or his best life.”

The Walk MS event will began at 10:00 a.m. at Kirby Park, and will be open to the public starting at 9:00 a.m. Anyone interested in participating in the walk can visit Visit walkMS.org, call 855-372-1331 or email [email protected].
