San Angelo Museum Announces Exhibits to Showcase Local Artists

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts announced the opening of two new exhibits that will highlight the talented artists and artisans of the San Angelo area: True Texas: Folk & Traditional Arts of the Concho Valley and The Angelo State University Art Faculty Biennial Exhibition. The exhibits will be on display from Friday, September 18 through Sunday, November 29.

The museum’s current hours are 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sundays. The museum is closed Monday.

Made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, True Texas: Folk & Traditional Arts of the Concho Valley celebrates fine craft and folk artistry from 22 makers across nine counties in the Concho Valley. Silver and gold belt buckles, engraved bits and spurs, hand-tooled leather gear, richly textured loom weavings, hand-forged kitchen tools, and eye-catching patchwork quilts are just a few examples of the work on display. The research, fieldwork, photography, and accompanying catalog for this exhibit were completed by experienced folklorist Douglas Manger of Seguin.

“The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts recognizes the significance of this region and its role as one of the great agricultural capitals of the nation,” said Howard Taylor, SAMFA President. “We also see it as a region with important artistic, folk and cultural traditions, which need to be more fully recognized and appreciated.”

The True Texas project is designed to further this goal.

The Angelo State University Art Faculty Biennial Exhibition features the work of the talented faculty members of Angelo State University’s Art Department. Each one of these dedicated instructors is an active and accomplished artist. This dynamic and varied exhibit will feature new works by Esteban Apodaca, Katherine Bunker (Kat Truth), Edwin Cuenco, Ralph Randall “Randy” Hall, Chris Stewart, Devon Stewart, Ben Sum, and John Vinklarek, in a broad range of media including painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, video, and installation.

In order to protect the health and safety of staff and visitors, the museum requires everyone to wear a mask or fabric face covering and to spread out at least 6 feet apart from each other. Admission is currently free.

For more information about the exhibits please call the museum at 653-3333. The museum is supported by generous contributions from both individuals and businesses. This project is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Folklife, and the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council.
